Did www.rutherfordweekly.com Another Famous North Carolinian... er Famous North Carolinian Musician/Composer Musician/Composer Max Roach Max Roach Brown, Eric Dolphy and Booker Little. He also led his own groups and made numerous musical statements relating to the civil rights movement. Roach was born in the Township of Newland, Pasquotank County, North Carolina, which borders the southern edge of the Great Dismal Swamp. Athough his birth certifi cate lists his date of birth as January 10,1924, He has been quoted as saying his family believed he was born on January 8, 1925. His family moved to the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in a musical home. His mother was a gospel singer. Roach started to play in parade orchestras at a young age. When he was 10 years old, he was always playing drums in some gospel bands. As an eighteen year old boy in 1942 he was called to fi ll in for Sonny Greer and play with the Duke Ellington Orchestra performing at the Paramount Theatre. He was very innovative and one of the fi rst to play in the bebop style. His list of contributions are endless. Maxwell Lemuel "Max" Roach, born January 10, 1924, died August 16, 2007, was an American jazz percussionist, drummer and composer. He was a pioneer of bebop and worked in other styles of music. He is generally considered alongside the most important drummers in history.
