See Jennine Watts at Todd Gilliam, RN, in May became Rutherford Regional Health System's fi rst recipient of the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Begun in 1999, the Daisy Award program has given awards to nurses from over 2,000 hospitals in all 50 states and 15 foreign countries. The Daisy Award is designed to honor nurses who provide extraordinary patient care. Nurses who perform over and above their typical job expectations can be nominated, usually accompanied by a specifi c patient's testimony to that nurse's exceptional care. Gilliam, a nurse in the RRHS Emergency Department, was nominated by a patient whose personal story described Gilliam's patience and compassion during an extremely anxious visit. The patient detailed Gilliam's gentle touch in response to the patient's frightening health concerns and hesitation of coming to the Emergency Room. "I was beyond impressed with his professionalism and compassion," the patient noted. "He talked me through all of my tests and procedures, keeping my mind off how afraid I was. He was the dream nurse to handle my care. He went way beyond what I thought a nurse could do for me." Gilliam was honored in his department by hospital leaders, physicians and fellow staff members during a ceremony. He was presented with a framed certifi cate, a Daisy Award signature lapel pin and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled A Healer's Touch. The program was started by the family of Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, a little-known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patients' families. "The Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses was established to say thank you to nurses around the country, because nurses are truly unsung heroes," said James Atkins, CEO of RRHS. He added, "We at Rutherford Regional are proud to participate in this effort because we feel nurses are deserving of our society's profound respect and recognition for the education, training, brainpower, and skill they put into their work, not to mention the caring with which they deliver their care."
