After wrapping the Emmy-winning series in 2013, Cranston turned his attention to the theater for a time, leading the cast of Rob- ert Schenkkan's play "All the Way" on the Broadway stage. Now, the much-lauded actor is reprising his role as U.S. Pres- ident Lyndon B. Johnson, alongside Anthony Mackie ("Captain America: The Winter Soldier," 2014) and Melissa Leo ("The Fighter," 2010), for HBO's original film adapted from the play. "All the Way," which follows LBJ's turbulent first year of presidency follow- ing the assassination of John F. Kennedy, premieres Saturday, May 21, on HBO. Johnson took the presiden- tial reins amidst chaos, and chaos generally makes for good TV. Within little more than two hours of JFK's assas- sination in Dallas, then-Vice- President LBJ was quickly hus- tled aboard Air Force One and sworn in as the 36th president of the United States. During his first year as presi- dent, Johnson took up Kenne- dy's cause after the latter man- dated civil rights legislation in his June 11, 1963, speech in the wake of several protests from the black community. "All the Way" takes place during this year, from the aftermath of JFK's Nov. 22, 1963, assassina- tion to the landmark signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to Johnson's landslide re-election in Nov. 1964. "This is a giant of 20th-cen- tury American politics, a man who changed the country for- ever, and someone who under- stood and exercised power in a way that we have rarely seen before," the playwright said in a panel discussion just before the stage production's Broad- way debut. The play was a great suc- cess, winning the 2014 Tony Award for Outstanding Play, with Cranston nabbing the Tony for Best Actor in a Play. He reprises his role for HBO and is almost unrecognizable after his transformation into the stately LBJ — particularly to those who still see him as the shorn and scowling Heisen- berg of his "Breaking Bad" days. Cranston was hardly an un- known before landing the role of Walter White — he'd had loads of smaller parts and was probably best known for play- ing the hapless and zany fa- ther, Hal, in "Malcolm in the Middle." There's no doubt, however, that his portrayal of a meek-chemistry-teacher- turned-ruthless-drug-lord in "Breaking Bad" skyrocketed him to the top of the A list, earning about a zillion nomi- nations and awards, including six Emmy wins and a Golden Globe. His resumé — both pre- "Breaking Bad" and since — is a testament to his breadth as an actor, and bringing his skills to the stage was just another feather in Cranston's cap. The transition from a cancer-ridden drug kingpin to a real-life poli- tician may not be an obvious one, but a study into who John- son was and what he accom- plished made it a role Cranston wasn't about to pass up. "When I read Robert's script, I thought, 'oh my god, this character is amazing,'" he said in the panel discussion, "and to be able to take a bite out of that guy was a big chal- lenge for me." Cranston's isn't the only face you're likely to recognize (if you do recognize it — the makeup department knows its stuff) in the HBO production. Mackie stars opposite Cran- ston as Martin Luther King Jr., who must contend with con- servative leaders as he collabo- rates with Johnson to push the cause for racial equality in America.
