From various credit card application forms to cou- pons to a local deals, these pieces of mail that are often tossed straight into the trash are not only an annoyance but a threat to your personal information. Pre-approved credit card offers are especially dangerous, as they are an easy target for iden- tity thieves. Criminals can steal the incoming mail and actually apply for the credit card using your information. To minimize unwanted mail, texts and spam - and the risk of identity theft - Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises consumers on where to turn for help. "It's nearly impossible to completely eliminate spam text messages, unwanted phone calls and mail," said Matthew Fehling, BBB President/ CEO. "You can however, reduce the number of unsolicited mailings, calls, and emails you receive by learning where to go to "just say no." ● Opt out of pre-approved credit card offers. Pre-approved credit card offers can be used by identity thieves who open fraudulent credit accounts after stealing incoming mail. Stop pre- screened credit offers from reaching your mail- box by "opting-out" of pre-approved offers for at least five years by calling 1-888-5-OPTOUT (567-8688) or visiting optoutprescreen.com. All three major credit reporting bureaus, Equi- fax, Experian and TransUnion, offer the option to opt-out. ● Stop unwanted direct mail solicitations. To stop most unwanted mailings, consumers can go to dmachoice.org and stop receiving mail from members of the Direct Marketing Associa- tion (DMA). While the DMA regularly updates its list, it may take up to six months before solicitations from all DMA members stop. Keep in mind that there is a $1 charge to register. According to the the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and the Federal Com- munications Commission (FCC), The TCPA and the FCC's rules ban many text messages sent to a mobile phone using an autodialer. These texts are banned unless (1) you previously gave consent to receive the message or (2) the mes- sage is sent for emergency purposes. This ban applies even if you have not placed your mobile phone number on the national Do-Not-Call list of numbers telemarketers must not call. ● Take advantage of the Do Not Call Registry. The National Do Not Call Registry offers a free and easy way to reduce telemarketing calls. Reg- ister any phone number or to get information about the registry by visiting donotcall.gov or calling 1-888-382-1222 from the phone num- ber you want to register. Telemarketing calls should cease within 31 days of registering. ● Do not reply to spam text messaging. Re- sponding to a spam text message only confirms a working number and opens the door for more messages. If your number is already on the Do Not Call Registry and you're still receiving mes- sages and phone calls, file a complaint with the FCC. BBB National Partners AT&T and Verizon have partnered with PrivacyStar to give users control of their smartphone by allowing them to block unwanted numbers, look up unknown numbers, and file a complaint with the FTC. The smartphone application is available for An- droid, BlackBerry and iPhone.
