12 www.DesertMessenger.com May 18, 2016 I often write about my dreams in this column. Sometimes I dream whole stories from start to finish. Sometimes I dream complete nov- els! The next morning I must rush from my bed to my computer and write the story right away. Because you see, stories are like birds and fly away quickly, never to return. Last night something unusual happened. Maybe it was because I have a cold, and I kept waking up during the night. Every time I went back to sleep I seemed to dream a new story....just snippits, none of them complete. Some stories were extremely short, but others had amazing details. For example, a girlfriend and I for some reason were running across campus and came to a retirement home. We weren't supposed to be there and were frantically trying to find our way out of the huge complex. Fi- nally, we got outside the building. I remember the manicured lawn, an estate really, with beautiful flower beds and lush, green trees. I saw people walking along a path leading from the garden. I felt so relieved. As I was heading to the campus library, I passed a guy ask- ing a group of people for directions to that very place. I approached him, told him I was going there, and would direct him. The dream ended so I don't know whether he accepted my offer. Dr. Sigmund Freud, the dream expert, says, "The interpretation of dreams is the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mind." Of course, he also says, "Dreams are often most profound when they seem the most crazy." (If I wanted to analyze my dream, I'd say it has something to do with my not want- ing to get older and certainly never live in a retirement home!) Another dream story included babysitting a darling, blonde, three-year-old girl and another creating a shoe that grew when your feet grew so you never had to buy new ones. I have a favorite emerald-green, glass cup given to members to celebrate the Seattle Art Museum's five-year anniver- sary. It is a jewel of a cup, large and heavy, which I use each morn- ing for my coffee. In the dream, I was at a gathering, and I couldn't find it. I looked for it and several times thought I'd found it, but I hadn't. I remember specifically a girlfriend helping me look and of- fering up several similar cups but never the right one. I don't think I ever found it because surely I would have remembered that. Go figure??? Where do these ideas come from? So, that's four unconnected dreams in one night. I seriously doubt any of which will make their way into this column, except of course this one, because they're too "far out" or not enough substance. And there may have been other dreams last night, but as I say, they have flown away like birds, perhaps to nest in other minds. Meanwhile, I look forward to other night-time adventures to share with my read- ers.
