The Cliffside Historical Society, in partnership with Haynes Branch Library, held an "In Service to Our Community" open house April 10. The event provided those in attendance an opportunity to tour the new library building as well as learn more about the Cliffside Historical Society and view books and materials from the community's past. The Haynes Branch Library was named in memory of Raleigh Rutherford Haynes, who was one of the founders of the area's textile industry and who created a library in Cliffside. In discussing the historical society, President Wayne Smith told those in attendance that "I can't tell y'all a thing about Cliffside you didn't live through." Board Member Phillip White explained that the society exists to preserve as much material about Cliffside as possible. White pointed out the many books and materials about the area that are available to loan from the library. Because the library helps to also provide information and preserve the community's history, the society presented a Golden Eagle that once stood in the Cliffside Memorial Building and later the Cone Mills offi ces. The eagle was captured in 1922, White said.
