UP & COMING WEEKLY 910.484.6200 City Partners with NCDOT for Sidewalk/Pedestrian Projects by LEE JERNIGAN The City of Fayetteville has entered into agreements with the N.C. Department of Transportation to leverage funding for sidewalk and pedestrian improvements along several roadways around Fayetteville. The N.C. DOT owns and maintains most major roadways within the city limits and is responsible for constructing projects along these roads. At the City's request, a total of approximately $2.03 million of these projects will go to construct sidewalk, pedestrian traffic signals and bus stop improvements. The City of Fayetteville participated in approximately $613,000 worth of this cost with N.C. DOT providing the remainder. In addition to these funded construction projects, the City was recently awarded a Pedestrian Planning Grant from N.C. DOT's Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation, which will fund a comprehensive pedestrian planning study, building on the Fayetteville Bikes and Walks study that was completed by Fayetteville Area Metropolitan Organization (FAMPO) in 2011. Work on the plan is expected to begin this summer and be completed in 12 to 18 months. This comprehensive study will inventory existing pedestrian facilities throughout the entire city limits and identify needed improvements. Finally, the City has submitted an application for a Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) grant to FAMPO for a sidewalk project along Rosehill Road from Country Club Drive to Shaw Mill Road. The estimated cost for this project is $550,000, with only a 20% match ($110,000) required from the City. Results from the selection process for these grants will be known this summer. The City is excited to announce these projects that will improve the safety and operation for pedestrians, bicyclists and transit users within our community.
