After serving on Kai as philanthropy chairman and vice president of communications, I am excited for the new challenges that await me in this position. I want to continue our great 127-year history by challenging our executive team and the rest of the chapter to keep improving. I have two goals that I want to work toward during my term: grow our chapter size with our improved recruitment committee and improve our attendance in Beta leadership programs, especially with Wooden and our 177th convention in Oklahoma City this year. Of course, both of these goals will be in addition to our continued success with our chapter GPA. In _kai_, Alex Jobin '17 Chapter President jobin008@umn.edu the betA Piper PAge 4 INITIATION Beta Pi initiated the largest pledge class in recent memory, with 19 brothers. Quality was not sacrificed for quantity, as 12 of the 19 made the Dean's List and had a GPA of more than 3.4. With this pledge class, our brotherhood has initiated more than 1,900 members! Brothers from the Zeta Zeta Chapter at the University of Wisconsin— Oshkosh attended the ceremony, and we'd like to thank all the alumni who attended the initiation week activities. BROTHERHOOD RETREAT During the fall semester, the Brotherhood Retreat was held at the home of Brother Jake Woll '17 in Worthington, Minnesota. The upper- classmen triumphed over the underclassmen as champions of the backyard tackle football game. The chapter cultivated its intellect with a tour of the neighboring Dayton House, where the great-grandfather of our current governor and Dayton's department store founder, George Draper Dayton, built his home. Thank you to the Woll family for accommodating us and feeding us terrific food the whole weekend. COMMUNITY SERVICE EXPANDS Thanks to Brother Evan Jobin '18, who reintroduced the idea of a community service chairman, our chapter involvement in community service events skyrocketed. During the fall, brothers gathered to rake leaves at houses in Como Village for people with physical disabilities. Twelve members traveled downtown for the CFF Tower Run, an event to raise money by climbing the IDS tower steps for the chapter's new philanthropic partner, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. EXECUTIVE TEAM Our chapter's elected executive team recently returned from the Keystone leadership event in Itasca, Illinois. Discussions consisted of defining chapter culture and how to inspire members to be as involved as possible. We left inspired to start the new year of Beta leadership and with an action plan to influence the chapter. Thank you to everyone who contributes to our chapter and the General Fraternity for helping us have formative leadership experiences like this one. ALUMNI BANQUET Mark your calendar for the alumni banquet on Wednesday, May 11, at Day Block Brewing Company in Minneapolis. Please see page 6 for more information. We acknowledge that our brotherhood is sustained by our generous and passionate alumni, whose Beta spirit cut with experience shines as bright as a diamond. We want you all to know that the chapter house is your house, and that we welcome you any time with open arms. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
