the betA Piper PAge 2 A s with all alumni who leave this world, many Beta brothers were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Brother Pat Fallon '68 on November 13, 2015 at the age of 70. Pat became one of Beta Pi's most accomplished and well-known alumni as an icon in the advertising world. He was a lifelong Minneapolis resident. In 1981, Pat and four business partners founded Fallon McElligott Rice, an advertising agency that later became known as Fallon Worldwide. In recent years, Pat was inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame, as well as the Minnesota Business Hall of Fame. He served on several boards in the Twin Cities, including the Guthrie Theater and the Minnesota Orchestra. "From the time Pat joined the Beta house in the mid- '60s, his Beta brothers have remained among his closest friends. Even when he was well-established as a worldwide advertising industry icon, Pat continued the priority of his Beta connections. He annually held Beta brother retreats at his cabin and home in Mexico. Pat held both Minnesota football and his Beta experience sacred. He was chapter president and led campus leadership groups as an undergraduate. There has been no greater man of principle than Pat. He was a moral compass to all who knew him, though he would dislike and deny that characterization. Pat embodied the Beta characteristics, which we should strive to emulate." – Bob Stein '69 "For some reason we thought he'd be the last to go...not the first! Pat was our brother of another mother. Pat will be remembered for his loyalty. He was loyal, probably to a fault. He stuck with his friends and associates, even when they needed to be let go. He was brilliant, irreverent, irascible, bold, independent, and insecure. He could be alternating warm-hearted and cold-blooded and he would call it like he saw it, which I loved about him! I was gone for his rise to the top of the advertising world. When I returned, he was an icon in the industry—but it didn't change him; the Pat I knew and loved in 2015 was pretty much the same Pat I knew and loved at the Beta chapter house." – Jim Carter '70 Remembering Pat Fallon '68 Brothers Share Their Favorite Memories The planned projects for this summer are designed to significantly improve the safety, security, utilities, and amenities in the chapter house. The volunteers on the Housing Corporation board are carefully utilizing generous contributions from our alumni to ensure they're used prudently and aligned with the capital campaign goals. We will stretch funds as much as possible. While the funds raised greatly help our opportunities, we know additional improvements will be needed in the future. For now, we are focused on fixing the most urgent and pressing items. To allow all the work to begin, the chapter house will be empty this summer. Active members will move out in May after the semester ends. By this fall semester, Beta's undergraduate men will move back into the renovated building, which is expected to help them attract a strong class of new members. GENERAL CONTRACTOR SELECTED In March, we selected local outfit Flannery Construction as our general contractor for the restoration and improvement work for this summer. After considering several options, Flannery presented the best value and fit, considering the scope of work, timeline, and available funds. In addition, Flannery comes highly recommended by the AOPi sorority, who has been working with them for several years and recently also installed a fire suppression system in their house. As a result, we have a lot of confidence in their ability to work with our summer deadline and budget. We're excited to make final pre-construction decisions and get the work started in May! The most complex project is a new fire suppression system, in the form of a professionally installed sprinkler system that will expand across the facility. We are evaluating options for this system, and will make a good decision based on durability, expected lifespan, ability to hide it, and overall design. In the Greiner living room, we will ensure we maintain the integrity of the ceiling and trim work. Thank you to Cian Chase '08 and Bill Madden '86 for leading this effort in recent months.
