A group of about 60 children from age six on up to seniors in high school put on the perfor- mance, sponsored by the Tehama County Arts Council along with the State Theatre, said arts council board member Bill Belcher said. There were 91 who auditioned the week before with rehearsals held daily leading up to the two Saturday performances directed by Joe Godburn and Scott McGee with four assistant directors: Lance Ferreira, Olivea Holbrook, Caryn Mofield MISSOULA CHILDREN'S THEATRE By Don Thompson The Associated Press SACRAMENTO California Gov. Jerry Brown said Monday that the initiative he is promoting for the November ballot would help fix a mistake he made nearly 40 years ago that has sent too many offenders to prison for decades with little hope of rehabilitation. PAGE A8 SACRAMENTO Brown OKs pay hike during family leave By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF While clouds loomed throughout the day, the rain held off and the wind didn't pick up un- til later in the afternoon Saturday for the Red Bluff Round-Up Kickoff Car Show held on Pine Street between Main and Wash- ington streets. The event drew 41 par- ticipants despite cooler temperatures and threat- ening weather, said show chairman Rob McGrew. "Last year we drew over 100 entries, but with the weather and long drive, we mostly have local peo- ple this year," McGrew said. "We typically draw from the Chico to Red- ding area." New in 2016 were tro- phies for motorcycles as well as cars, since there were 10 entered in 2015. Saturday's show had two motorcycles. Chris Culver of Red Bluff said has competed both in the car show and the chili cook-off over the past eight years. "This is the first year I've not done the chili," Culver said. "I like car shows and I like to show off my 1998 Corvette. By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Chili of all flavors and varieties was available for tasting Sat- urday at the Ron and Shirley Judson Memorial Red Bluff Round-Up Chili Cook-off held in downtown Red Bluff in front of the Tehama County Superior Courthouse. The annual event, which has been taking place for about 30 years, was re- named in 2016 after the death of Ron Judson, who founded the event and re- mained involved right up to his passing, co-chair- woman Michelle Blunkall said. This year's people's choice award went to Roll- ing Hills Casino and the showmanship booth award went to the Red Bluff Vol- unteer Fire Department. Judges evaluated salsa, chile verde and red chili. The winner for the salsa category was Dionne Cooley, of Reno, Nevada; the chili verde winner was Adrian Fuhrman, of Ben Lomond and the red chili category went to Dora Je- pson, of Merced. An International Chili Society sanctioned event, the competition drew from as far south as Merced and as far away as Bonanza, Oregon and east to Dayton and Reno, Nevada. Com- petitors came from San Jose, Santa Cruz, Pleasan- ton, Roseville and Wood- land. There were 20 in the red chili category, 10 en- tered in the chili verde di- vision, 10 in the salsa com- petition and 28 in the peo- ple's choice category.
