MARCH 9 TH for the march 16 th edition Desert Messenger News Email: editor@DesertMessenger.com 928-916-4235 www.DesertMessenger.com Phoenix, AZ- The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), in association with the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD), has issued three new advisories that recommend fi sh consump- tion amounts to protect public health. These advisories are based on recent analysis of data from fi sh tissue samples taken from these lakes, which showed these fi sh have elevated levels of mercury. ADEQ encourages residents and visitors to Arizona to continue to enjoy the wide variety of recreation- al activities at each of these lakes, such as fi shing, bird watching, and swimming, which are not affected by this advisory. Fish can be an important part of a healthy, diverse diet because they are an excellent source of protein and low in saturated fat. The Ameri- can Heart Association recommends eating two fi sh or seafood meals weekly as part of a healthy diet. Any potential health risks from eat- ing fi sh on ADEQ's advisory list are based on long-term consumption, not eating fi sh occasionally. BACKGROUND: Fish Consumption Advisory: A fi sh consumption advisory is a pub- lic health alert that recommends amounts of fi sh to eat when ADEQ determines contaminant levels in fi sh tissues taken from Arizona waterways exceed state health stan- dards. These advisories are not for commercial fi sh sold in markets. Mercury in the environment can come from various sources. Ingest- ing mercury can cause numerous health problems such as damage to the central nervous system. Infants and pregnant or nursing mothers are considered most at risk to pos- sible health effects. Fish can accu- mulate elevated levels of mercury when larger fi sh consume smaller fi sh and insects. We have started planning for next year, February 3 and 4, 2017 Thanks to all who attended, all 600 of you. It must have been very hard to vote for your favorites. Every one was prize winning quality. It is always a joy to share our projects with others and talk to our friends and neighbors about them. Ribbon winners were:Patsy Collins, Louise Cheever, Brenda Ger- man, Judy Halvorson, Sue Harold, Marilyn Larson, Janet Nein- hauser, Kay Smith, Abby Weaver, Della Weymer, and Barbara Williams. At our last meeting it was voted to make donations with the pro- ceeds from the show to the Senior Center, Elementary School, and Food Bank. Although we are winter residents, we consider Quartzsite our home too and want to support the local needs of the town. Thank you to all who attended and we look forward to seeing each of you next year. Thank you also to the Senior Center for taking such good care of us, we couldn't so it without you.
