Main Street, Quartzsite • 928-927-6310 QIA fundraiser for injured firefighter a huge success by Joanne Winer I've heard it said that "It takes a village." Having been on the receiving end of this town's help when my daughter passed away, I know just how important working together and trying to help some- one in need is - one that that this town really does well - as others can attest to. The generosity of the people here knows no bounds, and every time someone has a need of help, the whole town gets behind them because they are part of the family that makes this town so unique. A few weeks ago a pancake breakfast was held to raise money for a severely injured firefighter who suffered traumatic injuries when he was thrown from his ATV during a race in Parker. Even with a helmet, he landed on his head and had injuries to his brain. He spent several weeks in Intensive Care and is now in rehab learning to do things all over again. He works part time for the Quartzsite Fire Dept. and the Salome Fire Dept., so did not have insurance. The fundraisers that are being held to help this family will hope- fully cover some of the paychecks he is not getting right now so that he can still pay his regular bills on time each month. The pancake breakfast raised about $7,000 so this will help for awhile, but Steven still has a long way to go before he can get back to work. The Q.I.A., with the help of many volunteers and musicians, put together a country music variety show last Tuesday. It was another huge success as a benefit for Ste- ven and his family. Quartzsite Fire Chief Kevin Hess, along with several of Ste- ven's colleagues came to start off the event by giving an update of Steven's condition--he is now in rehab and learning to do a lot of things that he once took for grant- ed. Chief Hess thanked everyone for their continued support of Steven and his family. The musicians who put on this show were doing it for nothing for themselves, and all the proceeds from the door donations would go to Steven. The Q.I.A. had t-shirts for sale, again all sales went to Steven, raffle prizes from several local businesses (Mountain Quail RV Park and Café, The Eatery, Times Three Restaurant, Steve and Patricia Estes, Pool family) and mugs from the Q.I.A. brought in more money. The 50/50 raffle that took in $200, was all donated back to Steven from the Q.I.A. and the winner of the raffle. The Q.I.A. Bingo group also donated $500. Plus all monies from the sales at the concession stand were also do- nated. Sandy Andreason was told if she sang "Can I have this dance?" again after the break, that the man who asked her would donate an- other $100 so she did!!! The music was provided by Sandy and Howard Andreason, Joe and Carol Young, Vince and Doreen Bingham, and Lenora Region. They played some great country music and singing, and lots of little bits of comedy thrown in. The efforts of everyone who was involved in the event ended up raising $2600! What a great turnout and a wonderful group of people who came out to aid this firefighter who spends his life working to help his community! Thanks to everyone who made it such a huge success, and we only hope that this mo- mentum keeps going until he no longer needs the help and can get back to his life and work again. Please keep him and his family in your prayers! (See photos Page 31) 585 N.
