"Whether you're experienced or new, all rid- ers should invest in a safety course," said Mat- thew Eberhart, AZGFD off-highway vehicle safety education coordinator. "New riders often expect to just jump on or in their OHV and head out, and they are unaware of the power and potential dangers these machines possess. A solid, hands-on safety course will cover that and more." Each year many deaths and inju- ries on OHVs are the result of an inexperienced driver, and safety courses are designed to protect rid- ers. Safety courses offer riders the opportunity to learn a wide range of skills, including machine capa- bilities, machine size and fit, and how to ethically and responsibly enjoy the sport. "While these machines are fun to ride and can give users access to some of the state's most scenic areas, an accident can happen in a split second," Eberhart said. "A safe driver is an educated driver." For information on courses the Department provides, visit www. azgfd.gov/OHV. In addition, it's also critical for all riders to wear a helmet. Whether enjoying a side-by-side, all-ter- rain vehicle (ATV) or dirt bike, all riders younger than18 years old are legally required to wear a Depart- ment of Transportation-approved helmet. Eye protection, such as riding goggles, is legally required for all riders if the OHV is not equipped with a windshield. Riding gloves, long-sleeved shirts, pants and riding boots are recommended and should be worn at all times to protect your hands, arms, legs and feet while riding. Vehicle owners are reminded that OHVs designed primarily for travel on unimproved terrain and weigh- ing less than 1,800 pounds are required to have a $25 OHV de- cal to operate on public and state lands.
