We were undecided about what we actually wanted to do, but knew that a big university was not something that interested us. One of the West Virginia Junior College recruiters came to our high school and had talked to the student body about what programs were offered and how long it took to get a degree. at was when I knew I wanted to go. At first, I thought this was going to be the longest 18 months of my life, but before I knew it, it was over. I loved the small classes and the ability to have one-on-one conversations with my instructors when I needed help. In college, I met some of the most wonderful people and friends, and I still stay in contact with them. My instructors are still available when I need advice or help, even aer graduation. I could not have asked for a better college experience, and wish I could go back to do it all over again. Currently, I am a medical transcriptionist for a local hospital, and I get to work from home every day. I type reports for doctors, surgeons and physicians' assistants. While in college, I took some classes that were related to transcription, office procedures, medical terminology, etc. When I graduated, I was offered a job in the medical records department as a specialist and then moved up to the department assistant. While the skills I learned in school helped me land this entry-level job, the skills from that job then helped me land the medical transcriptionist position with the same hospital. My message to anyone thinking of attending a career college would be that this is a great path for those who do not want to be just a number in the bigger universities. At a career college, your instructors will know your name, and resources and help are also always available. My college education has helped me land my job, and with my job, I now have health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, 401(k) and life insurance. I can now take better care of myself. Both my education and job have made me appreciate the things that I have worked for more. Hard work, dedication and respect go a long way.
