Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools
(ABHES)
ACCREDITING
AGENCY
SPOTLIGHT
In
the realm of higher education, the issue of quality has
taken on increased importance among students and
educators as the competition between colleges for
enrollments has increased.
Accrediting agencies were developed to ensure that education
programs provided by institutions of higher education meet
acceptable levels of quality. One such agency is the Accrediting
Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES.) ABHES is
recognized by the Secretary of Education of the United States
Department of Education to accredit private postsecondary
institutions and programs that are predominately engaged in
health education.
Every accrediting body recognized by the Department of
Education has a set of standards that define the qualitative and
quantitative characteristics of an effective program or institution.
ese standards are used to direct an evaluation team and the
ABHES Commission to evaluate an institution or program as a
part of the accrediting process.
An institution's staff and faculty are responsible for ensuring
achievement of accreditation and the continual improvement of
both qualitative and quantitative outcomes. is entire process
is known as accreditation, and it indicates a level of rigor that
institutions and programs have achieved.
Accreditation is a voluntary, independent review of educational
programs to determine that the education provided is of uniform
and sound quality. Being awarded accreditation ensures that an
institution has been evaluated and that it met set standards of
quality determined by the accrediting organization granting the
accreditation. A college or university's accreditation is maintained
by continued adherence to the set criteria.
