Others? Not so much. We love predicting the "next big thing" in our little corner of the Christian music world, and often relish when our pick turns out to win the hearts of our listeners, just as we "knew" they would. So here it goes, folks. I'm calling it — take out your pen and paper and write this down, whip out your cell phone and write a memo (or save this article), because I'm declaring "the next big thing" in Christian music, and you get to be in on it early! (And if I turn out to be right, you can even say you said it first.) Hollyn. Short and sweet – a one-namer, like Cher, Beyonce, or Madonna... err, Mandisa? Moses? Nineteen-year-old, Ohio-native Hollyn is taking the music industry by storm with her first single released to radio, Alone. First seen during the Hollywood rounds of American Idol Season 12 at the sweet age of 16, Holly Miller caught the ears of TobyMac, a well-established Christian artist and co-founder of Gotee Records, after a "friend of a mutual friend" sent some of her Youtube videos for him to check out. Finishing high school was most important, but after she graduated, she headed off to Nashville to start her career with Gotee Records, joining a long list of big-name Christian bands and artists like Relient K, Jamie Grace, Capital Kings and Finding Favour. Months before her debut, self-titled album, Hollyn, was released in October 2015, she was touring with TobyMac, Colton Dixon and Britt Nicole — a tour most emerging artists only dream of. She's been featured on Toby's latest album, This Is Not A Test, in a few songs, including "Backseat Driver" and "Lights Shine Bright." Her own sound is unique, not unlike her first few years in the music industry. Infusing pop and urban hip-hop in a very "current" sound, similar to mainstream artists like Tori Kelly and Ariana Grande, she immediately catches the ear, almost tricking the listener into thinking she's been around the "musical block" a time or two. Yes, she's young, but listeners with a more traditional ear should not be so quick to shy away from such a young sound — Hollyn has influences from not only pop music, but also Southern Gospel. She claims influences from groups like The Issacs and the Crabb Family, noting their ability to move audiences at the core of their being, inspiring her to write songs that grabbed the gut of the listener. Hollyn's "Alone" has already jumped to the Number 1 spot on the Billboard charts, and has already made it into the Top 10 most downloaded songs on iTunes. This is just the start of this blossoming artist's career — it won't be long before she's headlining her own tour — and then YOU can say, "I told you so." To hear the new song from Hollyn, and other great tunes, new and old, set your radio to our station — Christian 107.3. We hope you hear something that makes you dance, makes you think, and makes you feel, all while keeping the main thing the main thing.
