Highway 99 Like other routes, Highway 99 began as a horse and stagecoach trail extending from Mexico to Canada, and was eventually improved to higher standards as transportation evolved. In the early 1920s, when automobiles were being mass produced, a definitive United States highway system was needed for the promotion of commerce and tourism. In 1926, the Pacific Highway was designated to become US Highway 99. Highlighted in Tehama County is a small section of this historic highway. Along the route are various orchards, including prunes, walnuts, almonds and even some pistachios. The orchards bloom during February and March and make for a beautiful backdrop on the historic drive. During the summer months, the many fruit and nut stands open with opportunities to purchase some of the locally grown goods. From Red Bluff's Main Street take Antelope Boulevard east, as this was the original Highway 99E. Within a few miles is orchard country. In Northern California above Sacramento, Highway 99 was divided into two routes because of the Sacramento River. Highway 99E on the east side of the river and 99W paralleled by Interstate 5 on the west. The two routes join in Red Bluff. Highway 99W had some important "firsts" including in Corning, where California's very first municipal auto camp was established in the early 1900s.
