For many in the industry, this will be an opportunistic time to showcase new products, goods, and services while network- ing with past and future clients and business partners. While storeowners and designers utilize this approaching time of year as an opportunity to propagate their business, thieves view gatherings such as the aforementioned to capital- ize on the amount of valuables that are ever-present at these types of trade shows. Thefts at trade shows are generally rare occurrences, however, any securities taken to minimize risk is always a good way for those stationed on the trade show fl oor to practice safe sales techniques. Security continuously needs to be front of mind at all times, this is especially critical when traveling as jet-lag, fatigue, and disorientation due to time changes can cause dis- tractions. Whether the show is stationed at home or abroad, practicing safe sales precautions can be imperative to prevent any poten- tial security threats while at the show. Here, we've gathered a few more valuable tips to be mindful of as the "show season" gets prepared to kick off. Tips: • Before traveling to the show, site check the insurance cover- age that is currently in place on any goods to make sure your policy adequately covers trade shows. • Remove your security badge as soon as you leave the show. Don't advertise your profession in any way, and never carry goods with you or conduct business outside of your area. • Don't announce that you are attending a show on social media; thieves sometimes monitor posts and online traffi c. • Never carry any goods to the show; have them shipped via armored car. • If you end up buying something at the show, don't take it home with you; instead have it shipped to you. • If you do take goods to or from the show – and again, this is not recommended – make sure that your car is in good order if you are driving and don't make any stops on the way to your destination. • For storeowners and designers, always have at least two employees on the trade show fl oor; when showing high- value jewelry, have a second employee stand nearby with a cell phone. Cell phones can be a great deterrent to prevent theft. • Pre-programming cell phones with local emergency contacts and hotel/security numbers will save some time during the event of a robbery or theft. • Perhaps the simplest tip of all is to be aware of sur- roundings, while looking alert and confi dent. A criminal is more likely to target someone whom they perceive to be oblivious, distracted, or more timid than someone who appears to be at attention and vigilant.
