LIVE MUSIC Thur-Sat. 7pm One Eyed Romeo By Joanne Winer The world famous New Christy Minstrels will be returning to Quartzsite for two more great shows at the Q.I.A. on January 9. They will be doing a 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. show, and tickets are already on sale at the Q.I.A. office for both shows. Cost of the shows are $13.00 each and will also be available at the showtimes at the ticket window. The New Christy Minstrels have been around for many many years now, and are still under the direction of Randy Sparks, the original founder of the group. Although the lineup has changed over the years, it is still the great folk music that you heard way back when. In the 50s, Randy Sparks was travelling through Quartzsite on his way back to California when he saw a sign that said Hi Jolly Camel drivers tomb--and he went to the cemetery and saw the pyramid that still sits there. He was fascinated by the story of Hi Jolly and while continuing his drive, he wrote a song called Salute to Hi Jolly that he sang on several of his albums and all around the country, but never in Quartzsite--in fact most people here never heard of it. So, one day several years ago he called the mayor (Mike at the time) and asked "I wrote this song about Quartzsite and no one has ever invited me there to sing it, so I am inviting myself and my group to come--where can we play??" After a lot of phone calls from the mayor and others work- ing behind the scenes, they were booked into the Q.I.A. that year, and had a very successful concert--enough so that they have been coming back every year since and have now been doing two shows each time to get all the crowds in. The group will be singing a lot of their old standards like Saturday Night, Green, Green, If I had a Hammer, This Land is Your Land and many more, but they have also written some new songs that they have added to the shows. There is a lot of great music and lots of laughs with every show they have done here, and no two shows are the same.
