Shelby American Legion Post 82 Shelby American Legion Post 82 is sponsoring its annual High School Oratorical Contest for stu- dents in Cleveland County Schools. Cash prizes will be offered. First place winner will receive $100, a gold medal, and the opportunity to advance to higher competition. Second place winner will receive $50 and a silver medal. Third place winner will receive $25 and a bronze medal. Contestants will give a 10 minute prepared speech on the U.S. Constitution. Then they will give a fi ve minute speech on one of the amend- ments to the Constitution. It will be selected at the time of the contest. Interested students should contact their high school prin- cipals and begin working on their presentations. The principal will notify Post 82 of the name of the student from that school who will participate. The competition will be held the morning of Saturday, January 9, 2016, in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church, Shelby. The winner will advance to District Competition, to be held the following Saturday in Kings Mountain. Broad River Genealogical Society The Broad River Genealogical Society, 1145 County Home Rd., Shelby, NC, will be holding a meeting Sunday, January 10, 2016, at 3:00pm, at Neal Senior, 100 T.R. Harris Dr., Shelby, NC. Mr. Robert Brown from Shelby will be giving the presentation. Everyone is invited to our programs at the Neal Center in Shelby. There is no cover charge, and light refreshments are available. A friendly reminder that the Broad River Genealogical Society Membership Dues are now due for 2016 Membership Year. Anyone wanting to renew or join will need to send $25 to the fol- lowing address Broad River Genealogical Society, P.O. Box 2261, Shelby, NC 28152. Hunt, 1322 Patrick Avenue, Shelby, NC, will be holding a book signing in their library, Monday, January 11, 2016, at 10:00am. Author Ron Willis hopes that his stories give a small reminder that all experiences matter. "Telling Tails..er..Tales" is a short story collection of entertaining, poignant, sometimes humorous tongue-in-cheek style memoirs.
