CityViewNC.com | 9 old friend in the corner of my own bath- room? I am not a fickle person. In fact, I prefer the routine. I do best in pre- dictability. Is it fair that I should be ex- pected to indefinitely endure this evolv- ing trend of bathroom scales displaying bigger and bigger numbers when I have adhered to the same eating and exercise standards for decades? If you were around during the gas shortages, you may remember that car manufacturers changed the speedom- eters. In my childhood, speedometers registered all the way up to 175 miles per hour. When the national speed lim- it dropped to 55 so we could save gas, the speedometers gave up half of their numbers. We really did not need big numbers on the dial when everyone in American society with a driver's license had immediately slowed down. I confess that I have been shopping for a potential replacement of my old, but al- tered friend. I do not really have a need in my life for numbers on a bathroom scale that do not start with a "1." e free market system is driven by consumer demand. Surely there are others like me who have no tolerance for this new trend in bathroom scales to flaunt larger and larger numbers that we traditionalists have never had to see before now. e mere fact that we can fit more and larger numbers on scales does not mean we have to actually see them each day. I am looking for a scale that stops at 199. ere is no point in my cataloging more than that. It only makes the peo- ple around me less attractive to me. e children poke at me with their skinny little fingers. My wife feels the need to bring home new slacks with more cot- ton in them. ose things never hap- pened when the first number on the scale was a one. Furthermore, I intend to buy two of those scales and give the other to my doctor. His current scale, replete with its larger numbers, causes him to talk to me far less about turkey season and far more about turkey and dressing. And I am considering buying a late model car with a speedometer that stops at 70. ere is no point risking a speeding ticket at this stage of my life either. CV Who Do You Want Reading Your Images?
