The Fayetteville Observer NORTH CAROLINA'S OLDEST NEWSPAPER ~ ESTABLISHED 1816 50 | January/February 2015 MONDAY, MAY 22, 1950 Big Gallery Sees Clarks Lose to Amateur Golf Stars Biggest gallery match ever to follow a golf match at the High- land Country Club watched two topflight amateurs down two lo- cal professionals yesterday after- noon. Arnold Palmer and Harvie Ward, the scintillating amateurs downed the Clark brothers, Ar- chie and Fairley, one up after eighteen holes of play. Palmer, a resident of Ardmore, PA and a student at Wake Forest College, is southern intercolle- giate champion. Ward, a resident of Tarboro and a student at The University of North Carolina is national in- tercollegiate champ and Southern conference titleholder. Archie Clark is pro at the High- land Country Club and Fairley Clark is pro at the Fort Bragg Of- ficers Club. A sensation of the match was Palmer's terrific driving. The first hole was halved in fours and then Archie Clark put the pros one out in front with a birdie three on the second. Par threes halved the third and then the pros went two up when both Archie and Fairley grabbed birdie fours on the par five fourth. The fifth was halved in par fours. Palmer smashed a 300-yard drive on the par five 600-yard sixth and then followed it up with a booming iron to the edge of the green to go down in two putts for a birdie four and the hole to cut the pro lead to one up. Pars halved the seventh and eighth and then the amateurs evened the match at the turn on the ninth when Palmer holed out. Both amateurs parred the tenth with fours and went into the lead one up when Archie three-putted for a five. The eleventh and twelfth were halved with pars. Ward took the thirteenth with a par four to put the amateurs two up. Fairley Clark kept the match alive by halving the fourteenth with a birdie four. The fifteenth was halved in par threes and then Archie Clark put the pros in striking distance by sinking a ten-foot putt to wine sixteenth with a birdie three. Things looked dark for the pros on the seventeenth when Ward was just short of the green with his drive and iron and was down in two putts for a birdie four. Ar- chie Clark's tee shot was trapped and he was 5 feed from the pin on three, but he ran down the putt for another birdie to halve the hole and to give the pros a chance to halve the match on the eighteenth. But here Palmer smacked a 30- yard drive against a light wind and the hole was halved in fours giving the victory to the amateurs. "The sensational driving of Palmer was certainly a feature of the match," said Archie Clark. He said the length of Palmer's tee shots more than compensated for his unfamiliarity with the course. He was hopeful the two college stars would come back to Fayette- ville for a return engagement. Medal scores of the players yesterday follow: Ward 72, Fair- ley Clark 73, Palmer 74, Archie Clark, 75.
