Quartzsite is going "Radio Active" By Dave Anderson "Quartzsite in Motion" in co- operation with the Quartzsite Amateur Radio Association and multiple school districts through- out La Paz County is launching a new project called "Radio & Space Science 2016." The project has already begun with amateur radio classes already running in schools and organizations throughout the county, but in January it will take off in a much larger way. This year-long science education and community service project will include 11 separate but connected community and youth science programs running throughout 2016. The offi cial launch of the year- long program will occur next month at a special commu- nity "Radio Science Day" on Wednesday, January 13th at the Quartzsite Community Center. Hundreds of school students from nearby towns will be travel- ing to participate in the project throughout the day. There will be more than ten different radio sci- ence and amateur radio exhibition stations operating simultaneously throughout the day both inside and outside the community center. Visitors will have a chance not only to see live demos but actually will have "hands-on" opportunities to explore and use some of the latest radio science gear and technology. Three morning and early-afternoon sessions will be dedicated to school students but a later afternoon ses- sion will be fully open to everyone in the community. So save the date and stop by and say hello. The subjects of radio science, amateur radio and space science have repeatedly proven their ability to inspire and lift youth up into learning and careers in science, technology, engineering and math. As part of this year-long program, Quartzsite in Motion and the Quartzsite Amateur Radio Associa- tion have partnered to raise youth into these opportunities by pro- viding free training classes, study materials and license exams to any youth who are interested to explore amateur radio. Going even further, both organizations have teamed up to provide a new dual-band amateur radio to any student who passes their FCC license exams to help bring the students imagina- tion to life. Also January 17 to 23, 2016 marks another well-known regional Radio event, the 19th Anniversary of the QuartzFest ARRL Spe- cialty Convention held just south of Quartzsite. It is a week-long amateur radio, camping, learning and living event and it is the largest event of its kind in the world. It is always free to the public and offers nearly a 100 learning and "hands- on" seminars throughout the week in mobile radio, emergency communications, RVs & Off-the- Grid Living, Solar Energy, mobile antenna systems, fun for the whole family and much more. If you like RVing, amateur radio, emergency communications or solar energy you will fi nd it to be a fun, friendly and must-see event. To learn more visit www.QuartzFest.org. Quartzite is going "RADIO-AC- TIVE" in 2016 with new activities offering something for everyone across the region. As your Chief of Police for the Quartzsite Police Department (QPD), I hear and see the need for better community involvement with block watches. The QPD would like to coordinate and establish small neighborhood groups with a representative to communicate to the police department about the activities of your neighborhood. I understand and appreciate that there are some small groups that are already doing this in their neighborhoods. Please come to this meeting so I can identify and recognize each of you as a point of contact for QPD Offi cers. It is my goal to bring each Neighborhood Watch group together with QPD Offi cers and encourage others to participate in Neighbor- hood Watches to protect life and property. Also, QPD has a Vacation Watch Request Form for residents to fi ll out and be fi led at the QPD before leaving town. QPD offi cers will routinely check your property while you are out of town. I will provide more details about the Neigh- borhood Watches and Vacation Watch Forms during the meeting. I hope to see you at the meeting. Thank you.
