Operation Hero Comfort 8th Annual Support the Troops Fundraiser and Silent Auction Lake Havasu City, AZ - From collection kettles to toy drives to end-of-the-year tax deductions, the spirit of the holidays means giving to favorite causes and those less fortunate. Better Business Bureau (BBB) Wise Giving Alliance (WGA) urges donors to research chari- ties before giving to ensure their generous contributions are going to trustworthy organizations. BBB WGA shares five tips to help donors give wisely and make the most of their generosity this holi- day season: Watch out for name similarities. When charities seek support for the same cause, their names are often similar. Before you give, be sure to have the exact name of the charity to avoid a case of mistak- en identity. Avoid on-the-spot donation de- cisions from unfamiliar organiza- tions. The holidays bring a higher frequency of donation requests in public locations. Don't succumb to the pressure of making an im- mediate giving decision. Respon- sible organizations will welcome a gift tomorrow as much as they do today. Be wary of emotional appeals. Marketers have been known to ex- ploit the holidays to make emotion- al pleas to donors. Always research to verify the selected charity oper- ates ethically. Avoid charities that don't dis- close. Although participation is vol- untary, charities that don't disclose any of the requested information to BBB WGA raise a critical red flag for donors. Visit Give.org to find out more about a selected charity. Rely on standards-based evalu- ations. Charities can demonstrate their trustworthiness by agreeing to in-depth evaluations, such as the 20 BBB Standards for Charitable Accountability.
