The inspection, conducted by offi cials with the Department of Insurance Offi ce of State Fire Marshal (OSFM), is required on a regular basis as part of the North Carolina Response Rating System (NCRRS). Among other things, the routine inspections look for proper staffi ng levels, suffi cient equipment, proper maintenance of equipment, communications capabilities and availability of a water source. The NCRRS rating system ranges from one (highest) to 10 (not recognized as a certifi ed fi re department by the state), with most rural departments falling into the 9S category. While lower ratings do not necessarily indicate poor service, a higher rating does suggest that a department is overall better equipped to respond to fi res in its district. Higher ratings can also signifi cantly lower homeowners insurance rates in that fi re district.. "I'd like to congratulate Chief Blanton for his department's performance and for the hard work of all the department members," said Commissioner Goodwin. "The citizens in the Town of Rutherfordton should rest easy knowing they have a fi ne group of fi refi ghters protecting them and their property in case of an emergency." Fire Chief Tommy Blanton said ""We are elated to learn that our ISO rating is improving from a 5 to a 4." This exemplifi es the hard work and dedication that the fi refi ghters have put forth to provide the best possible services to the Rutherfordton community. Mayor Dancy expanded that "This new rating will save homeowners & businesses in their property insurance and is direct result of the hard work of our Fire Chief & his cadre."
