Main, Quartzsite (across from McDonald's) Take an EXTRA 10% OFF Jewelry & Poery Shop Small Saturday - Nov. 28 Only By Joanne Winer The Q.I.A. is hosting the annual Silent Auction to benefit the Troops sponsored by Operation Hero Comfort on December 12 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is the biggest fundraiser for this group, whose mission is to send care packages to their "adopted" troop units in harm's way in the mid- dle east. Operation Hero Comfort has been in operation here in Quartzsite since 2005, and they have sent out hundreds of care packages since they started. Every month, each unit gets at least 4 boxes--two food and two non- food. Each box costs $15.75 to send, and sometimes they have to purchase additional items to put into the boxes that don't get donated. Operation Hero Comfort founder Anita Carlson and her late husband Doc started out sending packages to family members, and when they all got back safe, Doc and Anita decided to keep sending packages until all the troops came home. When Doc passed away several years ago, Anita kept it going with volunteers and family members pitching in. The Silent Auction has been going for many years now and every year it gets bigger and better. In fact it outgrew Town Hall and the Community Center and is back at the Quartzsite Improve- ment Assoc. (QIA) again; which is full circle, since it began there! This town has been very generous in the past by donating items for the packages, and also items for the Silent Auction. Many of our businesses and vendors pitch in every year and make it such a huge success by donating items for the auction. Anyone is welcome to donate an item for the auction. You can drop them off at Reader's Oasis Books or at the office at the Las Casas de Quartzsite (family and Senior housing office) on Quail Trail at the east end of town. If you need it picked up, please call Anita at 763-639-9330. The Silent Auction will have door prizes, 50/50 raffle, and refreshments available. It is also hoped that everyone attending will sign the Christmas cards available that will be sent out in the next packages to the troops. They currently have 10 units, and this fundraiser is hoped to be a huge success to help with the postage and items needed. Any non- perishable food items (no pork prod- ucts), non-food items like books, current magazines, DVDs, stationery, toiletries, etc. are greatly appreciated and there will be a box at the event to put them in. If you cannot donate any items, but would still like to support the troops by helping, come to the Silent Auction and see if there is anything you would like to bid on and join in the fun!! Any help is greatly appreciated by these brave men and women who are putting their lives at risk to help others.
