Preserving Our Present. Building for the Future. Page 3 C oming from a small town in western Kentucky with a high school graduation class of only 96 people, George Bray '73 felt fortunate to join a campus with 30,000 students. A friend from his hometown transferred to Indiana University and affiliated with Beta Alpha chapter, giving George the opportunity to meet the men of Delta Tau Delta. The Brothers of Beta Alpha were welcoming and open, and in the spring of George's freshman year, he joined the Fraternity. Delta Tau Delta not only helped George transition into a larger community, but it provided him an instant social circle, academic support, and leadership opportunities. His brothers were a steadfast support system, particularly when it came to his studies. "I had been struggling with motivation in my classes and Steve Ober '73 suggested we take the exact same classes our sophomore year. We studied together and I developed good study habits as a result of his influence," George said. By the time George was a senior, he would win the chapter award for academics. George worked to positively influence the members of Beta Alpha, just as they did for him. As pledge trainer, he was able to directly impact younger generations of Brothers. "I had a group of pledges who I took under my wing and provided leadership and mentored," George said. Recently, he has been able to reconnect with some of these men who told him his leadership and motivation made a difference in their lives and Fraternity experience. Working for AmerisourceBergen, a Fortune 20 pharma distribution company, for the past 40 years, George has had several different jobs within the company. He currently works as the vice president of customer development for Walgreens, the U.S. arm of Walgreens Boots Alliance. In addition to his role working with Walgreens, he also has become a certified executive coach and this has been one of his most rewarding jobs. He began to develop his coaching skills as a senior at IU coaching the Delta Tau Delta Little 500 team. "It helped me develop some early leadership and coaching skills, which I've used in managing different sales forces and large groups of people. For all of the experiences George gained through Delta Tau Delta and what it has meant to his career, he wanted to do something for Beta Alpha. He had been a dedicated donor to the chapter's education fund, and when he was approached about joining the Preserving Our Present. Building for the Future campaign, he jumped at the opportunity to give back to Beta Alpha. "I enjoyed the Shelter as an undergraduate and there were Delts who came before me who made contributions in order for me to have that experience," George said, "I felt it was my turn to make a contribution for future Brothers." It is his hope that his contribution to the chapter will inspire and motivate other alumni to donate and show how they were impacted by their Fraternity experience. George has three daughters, Laura, Mary Beth, and Molly, and two grandchildren, Charlotte and George, who are pictured with him above. He enjoys attending IU basketball games with Mary Beth, who also attended IU, and Molly works with him at AmerisourceBergen Corporation. Laura, his oldest, is prepping Charlotte for attending IU basketball games soon. George spends about one-third of his year at his second home in Big Sky, Montana, which his family enjoys visiting. When George is not working, he can be found listening to Blues music, bicycling, hiking, climbing mountains, and cross- country skiing. Our bikers are confident they have a chance of doing even better than last year's sixth-place finish. This is our largest alumni event every year and we encourage all alumni to join in the festivities. Ready for Intramurals Beta Alpha has done a great job participating in intramurals in recent years. This year, a new program has come to IU called the All Sports Series. In this league, fraternities will play one another in a variety of sports. We have almost 30 members participating on teams from a variety of classes. We believe Delta Tau Delta in on pace for excellence. Our academics have an opportunity to be in the top 50% on campus, we have a chance at raising a great amount of money for our philanthropy, and we continue to stay active on campus. Although there is always room for Beta Alpha to grow, our recruitment chairmen have done a great job recruiting the right members for our future. We are excited for another year!
