provided a showing of their works shortly before spring graduation each year since the mid-1980s, this is the first time the FTCC Graphic Design Portfolio Review will have a larger stage at Fayetteville's most popular festival. "The Dogwood Festival provides a festive atmosphere and it's where the people are," Sholter said. "The graphic design event is actually a required component of a class titled Portfolio. Much like a college senior show, the event provides our students an oppor- tunity to improve their best works to show quality and to present that work and themselves to the public. The ex- perience meshes with other parts of the class like preparing a resume and business card and honing communi- cation skills. It's all about preparation for the job market and getting some exposure." According to Sholter, 16 students will be showing traditional illustration and computer art, some photography, advertising design and logos. "The work generally has a com- mercial art feel, rather than fine art," Sholter said. "A successful designer draws on a process that applies clas- sical design principles with an ability to contrive solutions that work for the client, and are on time and budget. Then, they make it all happen using industry-standard creative soſtware on state-of-the-art iMac computers. Pho- tos are edited and oſten manipulated into composites and illustrations using a program called Photoshop. Logos, illustrations and other drawings are oſten rendered in Illustrator. Folders, book layout and other publications use InDesign. Our students also dabble in basic animation using Flash and in web design using Dreamweaver." Carrie King, executive director of the Dogwood Festival, said the graphic design show is a great opportunity to showcase the community's talent. "It is our hope that the exposure they gain from being a sanctioned event within the festival footprint will give them and their mission an opportunity to showcase the tremendous amount of da vinci robotic surgery [in the skilled hands of our surgeons] six arms are better than two imagine hands that are so delicate and precise that they can peel back the skin of a grape or create miniature origami models no larger than a quarter. Now imagine those hands performing delicate prostate cancer surgery or gynecological surgery through the tiniest of incisions. That's what the da Vinci Surgical System robot can do. For the patient, da Vinci means less pain, less blood loss and a quicker recovery. And clinical studies suggest that the da Vinci may help surgeons provide better clinical outcomes than conventional surgery.
