ing that they turned to the web site, Pros- per.com, which allows individuals to in- vest small amounts in business concepts. "I was reading one day about Pros- per and I wrote up the story of what we wanted to do. Twenty-two days later we were fully funded at an interest rate lower that what we could have gotten in a bank loan." Now they regularly deliver to busi- nesses around the region in that truck, including some, like gyms and dentist offices, where it seems like they wouldn't receive so warm a welcome. "The gym owner does have us pull around to the back," the younger George said, smiling. "He doesn't want his customers to see him ordering." The Georges have grown accustomed "We have a lot of military wives who order pies and cakes and then ship them to people around the U.S. and overseas." to eager receptions at their other stops, though. At Pink Floydz Hair Salon on Cumberland Road the two men were barely in the door before their sweets started selling. "My husband loves the coconut and the pecan," said Reneé Mullen, the sa- lon's owner. "I like the pound cake and the sweet potato pie, oh, and the banana pudding. My customers will call and ask if Uncle George has been here yet and then they'll give me their orders." The elder George said that's a com- mon practice at many of their regular stops. Store employees will take orders and collect money from their own cus- tomers and have the orders and the money waiting for the Gilmore men when they arrive. "We're not a fancy operation, we're just two local guys trying to make this thing happen," the younger George said. At Focus Nails on Owen Drive, Nail Technician Glenise Lesane could barely contain her excitement when the two men walked in. She hopped up from her table, where she was applying an intricate design to a customer's finger- nails, and then she spent several min- utes looking through the bin of goodies from Uncle George's while she decided on her selections. "I love Uncle George's sweet potato pie," she gushed. "We are always wait- ing on them to come in on Fridays. The cookies are good, too — but I love the sweet potato pie!" CV 32 | April • 2012
