March 21, 2012 Perspectives Quirky Quartzsite's Contributed by Violet Kiss Politics, Politics, Politics. We can't shake it if we tried. No matter who 'wins', the hotbed of 'us versus them' mental- ity will not die. Talking with some of the old/long-timers and in reading old Council minutes, newspapers, one eas- ily surmises the same. Nothing really changes except for some of the names on one side or the other. There's al- ways some names with staying power (since they won't let go of old personal agendas - until they literally pass away or inally get bored), some newer ones with newer gripes and others who have been here for decades remember- ing the crazy ights and battles of this Quirky Town. Every 3-5 years or so, there's a major battle of discontents whose lives are predisposed to simply stir up trouble. They couldn't be positive if they tried. The people who've had major personal angst with Quartzsite over the years will head or join this bandwagon try- ing to gain momentum over and over again. They have used these personal issues to create this "Quartzsite is bad" production. The 'followers' are led and fed by this angst. No one is totally right, no one is totally wrong. But, the Hatields versus McCoys mentalities run amok here nonetheless. Could things change? If we all make a con- certed eff ort, I surely would hope so. Many of us would like that to happen but how can it when these storms erupt with nothing but vile rumors, nasty re- marks, put-downs and outright manip- ulation of words, actions, people, and law? Many people don't want to come outside any more. Miscommunication is exactly that, poor or no communication. This is something each and every one of us could improve on. When communica- tion breaks down, do not be surprised Arizona Department of Veterans' Services has trained personnel to assist you in ob- taining benefits you may be entitled to from the Dept. of Veterans Affairs. These servic- es are available to active duty personnel, retired veterans, former service personnel, their dependents and survivors. Call Lee Borgen at (928) 505-4616 or visit their website at www.azdvs.gov. ATTENTION VETERANS www.DesertMessenger.com of rumors, innuendo, down- right erroneous statements creeping into your daily lives. Venomous spewing, threaten- ing gestures or boisterous and uncivil meetings are destruc- tive for all. Nothing could ever get done right. Personally, I do not care how it started or grew into the mess it is today, but this division is not healthy or conducive for our small but growing town. With this division, we do not see many actually volunteering or on town boards. With this division, we do not see people, chil- dren or families coming to or participat- ing in events. People complain, "you do not have this, that…give me this, that…" If we all treated this Town of ours more positively as ambassadors, we would get more businesses and visitors. More businesses give more jobs. More jobs lead to more people who demand more services, more infra-structure. Then the "circle" repeats, and repeats. We have grown well in the last 10 years, we will again in the next 10 years. Why wouldn't we? We are on an Interstate with beautiful weather and a nice, safe place to live. We have some very car- ing volunteers who do choose to get involved and do good work. These vol- unteers give to the town and do not care which 'side' you are on. I will be interviewing some of these heart-driven, selless people over the Need to Dig? Have Backhoe! will meet with you! Gentile folk, genuine no politics included, real people who care for this town and give of themselves simply because they want to. Man, do I like the sound of that!
