Page 18 Hi Jolly Cemetery's Pioneers – Who Were They? By Dinice Ross, Hi Jolly Cemetery, Records/Historian This next family featured in this Mini Series from the Hi Jolly Pioneer Cem- etery is a two generation family. They were a critical part in carving the his- tory of Tyson's Well into Quartzsite: The Hagely's and the Kuehn's. Headstone reads: MOTHER VIKTORIA HAGELY 1859 1940 Born: Oetigheim, Baden, Germany 2/23/1859. Died: 8/25/1940, Los Angeles County at age of 81 after suffering a stroke. Buried: Hi Jolly Pioneer Cemetery, Plot 89. Viktoria was known as "The Grand Old Lady of Northern Yuma County". Viktoria was married to Stephen www.DesertMessenger.com (some records show the name of Gabriel) Kuehn and was living in Oe- tigheim, Baden, Germany with their two sons: William and Charles. Their dream to immigrate to America came true in 1888 when they landed in N.Y.. One more son had been born during that voyage – Fred Victor Kuehn (some censes records have him born in N.Y.). The family arrived during one of the worst win- ters on record. Stephen was working at a brewery a few blocks from their home and almost froze to death trying to get home from work. He never recovered, dying of pneumonia a few months later. Viktoria was left with three little boys and no resources. Friends in New York City suggested that she write to her husband's uncle, Michael Welz in Arizona Territory. Uncle Mike wrote back and invited Viktoria to come west to run his boarding house and cook for the stage passengers. She packed up their few belongings and boarded the recently completed Southern Pacifi c Railroad that would Full Service Cardiovascular Office in Quartzsite! take her and her little boys on a jour- ney across the continent. On a hot day in August 1893 they arrived in Yuma and made the rest of the 87-mile ride to Tyson's Well and Stage Stop by stage. (The trip was made in the middle of August in 120-degree heat. The boys were 5, 7, and 13.) While working for Michael Welz, she met and married Antone Hagely. They added three more children to their family: George, Theresa and Emelia, all born at the Oasis Hotel at Tyson's Well. The Kuehn and Hagely children worked with their parents in all of their various enterprises. William Kuehn - Born 1881. When he was older, he heard about new opportunities in CA. and decided to move there. Charles Kuehn - Born 1886 (buried in Hi Jolly Pioneer Cemetery Plot 80) continued to work for his stepfather in his store and when he passed away Charles became the new owner of Hagely's Store and Anton's Hay & Grain. Antone and Viktoria decided to build a store of their own that would have a fi replace and constructed it using the rammed-earth method - this was known as the Hagely Store. Later they added another larger store on the west side of the building that was known as Anton's Hay & Grain. The remaining adobe walls of the Hagely Store are still present at the corner of Moon Mountain Road and Main Street. Viktoria's last trip to Yuma was by buckboard and was remem- bered by her as one of the most dif- fi cult journeys across the desert she had ever taken. This was when steamboats chugged up the Colorado River, and when supplies were taken by wagon train to Wickenburg, Prescott and other old- time mining centers. In April's edition of the Desert Mes- senger; 'Hi Jolly Cemetery's Pioneers -Who Were They?' look forward to meeting Viktoria's' husband: Anton Hagely – also from Germany, look- ing for opportunities in America. He carved out a permanent niche in Quartzsite's history. Local Resident! Serving Quartzsite area!
