34 NORTH BAY WOMAN | F A L L 2 0 1 5 >> con't from pg. 32 longtime friend, Judi Shils, executive director of Turning Green. She easily lists off Griffin-Black's finest strengths. "They are her enormously kind heart, her loyalty as a magnificent friend, her work ethic and her belief in the best world we can aspire to create. "We can all learn something from Susan – how to run a business that is wildly successful from the heart and with tremendous smarts, how to collaborate and how to do business and do good at the same time." Seven Questions for Susan North Bay Woman: What are the three biggest lessons learned in your career? Susan Griffin-Black: "People are the most important assets, living an integrated life is sustainable and meaningful, and it's much easier when you're profitable." NBW: What do you hope will be your legacy? SG-B "That we will be remembered for doing it our way and that we were deeply engaged in people, planet and purpose." NBW: Best resource for business hopefuls? SG-B: "My favorite book is still ' Growing a Business' by Paul Hawken. It's totally stood the test of time. You need to work with people, even if it's on a part-time basis, to cover the skills you don't have yourself. You need a good team and a sounding board. And, you need to understand the balance sheet and cash flow. Cash flow rules are different than profit." NBW: What pitfalls should be avoided? SG-B: "Too much money too early. You'll spend it on the wrong things. I see these startup tech companies printing sweatshirts and other things. That's company money and it seems wasteful." NBW: The EO product of which you're most proud? SG-B: "I have two. One is the new transformative night serum. It's a new face care product and it's the best skin care product in the world. It's made of a complex formulation of vegetable oils, botanical extracts and essential oils that really improves the texture of your skin. And, I love our lavender hand sanitizer because I think it takes a mainstream necessary product and made it an effective, affordable product for traveling that smells so good, everyone leans over to ask about it." NBW: Best single piece of advice? SG-B: "Be kind…to yourself and to others." ■ EO Exchange is at 84 Throckmorton Ave. in Mill Valley.
