Even years after his undergraduate studies, Mike still credits SigEp in helping him become the man he is today. "Through SigEp, I learned to be more open, interact with people different from myself, and gain confidence in myself in any setting." In recent years, Mike and his closest friend and business partner, Jonny Jones '82, attended the ceremony that initiated their sons, Michael McConnell '16 and Jack Jones '16, into the SigEp brotherhood. "Being actively involved in a ceremony that Jonny and I both went through was a real highlight in our lives—thinking about it still gives me goosebumps." Mike hopes that all undergraduate members can have a SigEp experience as significant as his; an experience that will change and shape their lives forever. "My son is a better person as a result of his SigEp membership and I couldn't be more proud of how he has developed into manhood. I hope this for all SigEps." Through his presence at the chapter house for visits with Michael and for OU football games, Mike has gained a firsthand view of Oklahoma Beta's need for physical improvements. This, along with the many ways SigEp has influenced Mike's life, inspired him to make a donation to the capital campaign. "The guys deserve a great place to live, especially after being recognized as the best house on campus through the President's Cup award. So many competitive fraternity houses are now being built—we need to keep up!" Mike explains. Mike hopes that his gift to Oklahoma Beta reflects how much the chapter means to him, to his son, and to his brother, Mark McConnell '86. "I believe what Oklahoma Beta is doing is extremely important. Watching people like Chip Long '82 and Marc Ganz '83 contribute their time to the chapter inspired us to donate to the campaign. They make me proud to be associated with all things SigEp." Mike and his wife, Chris, reside in Austin, Texas, where Mike is the president of Jones Energy Inc. Outside of spending time with his children, Michael and Claire, Mike has passions for Sonner football, art collecting, and golf. E-mail: mmcconnell@jonesenergy.com
