"Cleveland County's #1 Information Source" Airport to host annual Fly-In and Open House By APRIL HOYLE SHAUF Special to Shelby Shopper The 9th annual Fly-In and Open House at Shelby-Cleveland County Regional Airport will take place Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015. "The Fly-In allows the community to come out and see their investment first hand," says Airport Supervisor Jack Poole. "Many people have never flown or seen the airport. That is where JAARS comes in, Jungle Aviation and Radio Service. They bring a couple of airplanes and a helicopter to give rides to individuals who would like to pay for the experience." Flights cost $25 for the airplane and $30 for the helicopter and last about 10 minutes. The airplane carries seven passen- gers, and the helicopter carries three. This year children will also have the opportunity to have their photo taken with an air- plane and firetruck. A flight instructor will be available on the field to answer questions about flight training. This year's Fly-In will be labeled as an FAA Safety Event for pilots who are inter- ested in or who are currently enrolled in the WINGS - Pilot Proficiency Program. The local Civil Air Patrol Squadron will also be avail- able to promote their servic- es as well as to recruit new cadets and pilots. "And as usual, there will be a lot of airplanes coming in and going out," Poole says. Food for the event will be plentiful. The Flying Pig will pro- vide barbecue, and Dairy Queen will offer a variety of menu items. Compass Aviation, an airport tenant, will be providing information about their business and will also be selling Chick- Fil-A. The Foothills Marine Corp League will be vending ham- burgers and hot dogs. "We're hoping for sunny skies and light winds, and we plan on having a great day with good food and a lot of fun," Poole says.
