It is when a driver of a vehicle takes his or her attention away from the most important task of driving. Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle accidents and deaths. I would like to introduce a new term that can be emotionally harmful and that is "distracted living." When death comes into our world many times we have regrets. As a funeral director, I have seen people riddled with guilt over the death of someone whom they love. The guilt comes from something which was left undone toward the deceased. It could be a word spoken or a word not spoken. A promise never fulfi lled or an action never taken. In most cases we had good intentions to do the right thing, but we were distracted by life. I wonder how many times we take our attention away from the most important things such as our relationship with God and our family in order to pursue something less important. Life has a way of distracting us from reality. The distraction could be our quest for accomplishment, our desire to have things or some form of entertainment that has taken over our life. In allowing ourselves to become distracted we ultimately sacrifi ce the things which are irreplaceable. The truth of the matter is that when someone we love dies, we should have done all that we could to have a loving relationship with them while they were still alive. Asking for or accepting forgiveness, a note of encouragement, investing our time, a quiet walk together or just a hug and a kiss are ways to show how valuable they are to us. The worse thing about "distracted living" is that we never see the inevitable until it happens and then they are gone. Please don't be guilty of distracted living!
