Warren Rick Collins '94 FOUNDING A TRADITION OF BROTHERHOOD Robert "Bob" Howard '51 Leaves a Legacy at Alpha-Omicron Zeta T H A N K Y O U , L T he brotherhood of Lambda Chi Alpha has been a family tradition for Robert "Bob" Howard '51 since Alpha-Omicron Zeta's founding in 1917. Eleven members of Bob's family, including his father, brother, uncles, cousins, and son, Brad Howard '87, have been a part of this Lambda Chi Alpha legacy. "I think I was about 8 or 9 the first time I was at the Lambda Chi house," Bob said. The chapter house built in 1925 was constructed on land owned by his father and Lambda Chi member, Earl Ben Howard '23, forever marrying the Howard name to Alpha-Omicron Chapter. Much like his father, Bob was very active in the chapter while an undergraduate member. He served as vice president alongside his cousin, Vane Howard '52, and sang with his Lambda Chi Alpha brothers in the Singing Hoosiers. However, he did not limit his involvement to Lambda Chi Alpha, but became a part of various campus organizations. Bob was the manager of the basketball team all four years, was an "I Man," and even participated in the first Little 500 held in 1951. Though he has transitioned into alumni life, Bob has retained a close relationship with Indiana University and Alpha-Omicron Chapter. "I enjoy coming back weekly for football and basketball games and to see my friends," Bob said. "I haven't missed a game since 1950." He frequently returns to the chapter house on these visits and joins his undergraduate brothers for dinner. Bob has remained close to Bloomington and lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He and his wife, Anne, have two sons: Brent, who attended Purdue University, and Brad, who attended Indiana University. Overseeing seven companies in fields ranging from real estate to farming to hotels has kept Bob busy, but his passions of painting landscapes and woodworking help him to relax. You can contact Bob at 1230 Korte Lane, Fort Wayne, IN 46807.
