T
exas Alpha is well underway to recruiting one of the largest pledge
classes in recent history. Work began early in the spring semester
and resulted in over 40 attendees at Roundup. The hard work continued
as state parties and local rush events occurred throughout the summer.
This year, the captains placed an added emphasis on the idea that rush is
the responsibility of the entire chapter, not simply that of the appointed
chairman.
This fall, the chapter will see the largest enrollment it has in nearly a
decade. The brotherhood is strong—a dedicated chef and the recent
additions of a media room and basketball court encourage daily
participation. Construction on the new property located at 2501 Nueces
Street began this summer, allowing for move-in during the 2016 school
year. It is a thrilling time to represent Phi Psi on campus and we are
excited for what the future holds.

Texas Alpha Wins Chapter
of the Year (District 5) at
Woodrow Wilson
Leadership School
O
ver 660 Phi Kappa Psi undergraduates and alumni converged at
Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, June 17-20 to attend the
Woodrow Wilson Leadership School, which happened to be held during
the College Baseball World Series. The Texas Alpha chapter was named
Chapter of the Year for District 5 and was accredited with distinction
under Phi Kappa Psi National's Chapter Excellence Program (CEP).
The Chapter Excellence Program is designed to help chapters evaluate
their own performance while sharing best practices among all chapters. It
provides chapters with a method to evaluate strengths, document successes,
as well as identify areas where improvement is needed and allow goals
to be set for chapter performance. The foundation of the CEP is the 11
standards of operation adopted by the Executive Council in 1995. These
standards provide the blueprint by which chapters may measure their
performance and set goals for the future. They are also the standards used
by the Fraternity to determine accreditation and to evaluate the current state
of the chapter.
The applications are reviewed by Fraternity staff and select volunteers
who determine whether the chapter has fulfilled the expectations in each
of the standard areas. Accreditation comes from meeting or exceeding at
least eight of the 11 standards. Those chapters meeting eight or more
standards areas are accredited for a period of two years.
Levels of recognition include:
Accreditation with Distinction
Chapters meeting or exceeding all 11 standards
Accreditation with Honors
Chapters meeting or exceeding 10 standards
Accreditation
Chapters meeting or exceeding 8 or 9 standards
Texas Alpha scored perfectly, meeting or exceeding all 11 standards!
The 11 standards include: ritual, scholarship, membership recruitment,
campus and community involvement, chapter operations, fraternity
education, financial management, alumni relations, alumni corporation and
housing, risk management and code of conduct.
