AUGUST 26 - SEPTEMBER 1, 2015 UCW 17 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Most people cringe at the idea of taking a placement test. Fayetteville Technical Community College offers a custo- mized version of the ACCUPLACER known as the North Carolina Diagnostic Assessment and Placement Test (NC DAP). The goal is to accurately place students and reduce the time to complete develop- mental courses. There are six DEI (Developmental Education Initiative) states (Connecticut, Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Texas and Virginia) with custo- mized placement tests. However, not everyone has to test. Many transfer students are exempt from taking the placement if they have completed English or math comparable to FTCC and can provide documen- tation. FTCC is proud to announce that it is participating in the Multiple Measures initiative. We waive testing for students who have graduated from high school within the past five years and have taken at least four English classes, four math classes (one being higher than Algebra II) and have an unweighted GPA of 2.6 or higher. Students who do not fall into this category must take the NC DAP. The NC DAP is computer based. The multiple-choice sections of the NC DAP are considered "computer adaptive," meaning that the difficulty level of the test is based on the student's responses. The test consists of two parts, English and math, but each part has a subsection. The entire test can take up to three hours. The English portion has 50 multiple-choice questions that focus on reading comprehension and sentence editing. The English test also has an essay por- tion. Students are given a topic to write about, and the test is scored by the computer. Sometimes it may take a day to receive a student's writing score. But fortunately most of the time, the score is available much quickly! The math section consists of 72 questions. As previously mentioned, the math portion is computer adaptive, with questions selected based on a stu- dent's skill level. Students are provided a pencil and scratch paper. The test displays a calculator for certain questions. Students should allow two to four hours to test. Students must have a current admissions application to take the placement test. Students also must provide some form of picture ID. Acceptable forms of ID include official government issued identification card, such as a state driver's license, military, passport, tribal ID, or student ID. Students are encouraged to practice before they test. Fayetteville Technical Community College offers NC DAP prep in the Student Learning Center. FTCC also provides students with online resources to help them prepare. The NC DAP can be taken at the Tony Rand Student Center at the Fayetteville Campus or at the Spring Lake Campus and Fort Bragg Center located at the Bragg Training and Education Center. Testing is offered daily. Students can schedule an appointment, but most prefer to walk in. Accommodations for students with spe- cial needs are available with appropriate documentation. Testing is also available for our distance student population. For more information, call us at 910-678-8417. Learn how FTCC is the smart choice for your education!
