In essence, advocacy is actively supporting something important to you. The Chamber's advocacy role is for you, the business. It is becoming increasingly more important for chambers to get involved in advocacy on behalf of their membership. As our economy continues to try to rebound, government looks to increase taxes to help pay for growth and infrastructure, hinder our businesses with burdensome regulations while many uncertainties continue to prevent many businesses from expanding and hiring new employees. These businesses need someone to help speak collectively for them and the business community as a whole. To be the "voice of business," you have to be just that: you must take positions on issues while actively engaging your members, the community and -- most importantly -- the elected officials. Then you are truly advocating. Festivals, after-hours events, and business card exchanges are nice social events, but they aren't actually increasing a business's bottom line. It is critical that elected officials hear from the Chamber and the business community to learn about how legislation is going to directly impact them. Small business owners rarely have time to make calls much less write letters or schedule meetings with elected officials. They need the Chamber to speak for them and provide a collective voice for the entire business community. There is a municipal election coming this year. One way you can see who the Pro-Business candidates are is to join us at the Chamber's municipal election candidate forum, October 8th, 6:30 PM.
