age to stick with strict diets for long. One option for people who can't get motivated or can't stay motivated is hypnosis. I attended a seminar on hypnosis and weight loss in January and the present- er, Mark Patrick, plans to return regu- larly. The seminar combines hypnosis, programming, guided visual imagery, and nutritional information to help eliminate unwanted cravings, reduce portions, eliminate late day eating bing- es, increase energy and improve sleep. The fee was reasonable — $50 for one seminar and all subsequent seminars are free — but how does hypnosis work, and does it work? The mind-body connection in medi- cine is extremely strong. Food craving, portion control, and binge eating all are as much mental as physical. It makes sense that hypnosis should work. Hyp- nosis allows you first to reach a relaxed state, known as a trance, and then you are given a post-hypnotic suggestion. The suggestion may be that you feel an aversion to a specific food that you want to avoid or it may be to picture yourself at the ideal weight for you. You can't be made to do something you don't want to do, but you can be given the extra strength to do something that you al- ready wish to do. Some people benefit from hypnosis, many do not. Compared with some other methods of weight loss, this option is safe and inexpensive. Dr. Benjamin, the Surgeon General, implored us to join her "in a national grassroots effort to reverse this trend [of obesity]. My plan includes show- ing people how to choose nutritious food, add more physical activity to their daily lives, and manage the stress that so oſten derails their best efforts at de- veloping healthy habits. I envision men, women, and children who are mentally and physically fit to live their lives to the fullest. The real goal is not just a num- ber on a scale, but optimal health for all Americans at every stage of life." Be- coming less obese is a good goal. Hyp- nosis might be part of a good strategy to meet this goal. CV Lenny Salzberg, M.D. teaches and sees patients at the Southern Regional AHEC Family Medicine Center.
