proximately 1,200 X-rays each month are read by his team of radiologists. He joked that those figures might increase with the 18th Airborne Corps being redeployed, though broken ankles as a result from jumps are not the meat of his work like the CT scans and other studies of im- ages he reviews. Hands down, Griggs said the camaraderie and the people he gets to work with are the best parts of his job. Taking a moment to pause and collect himself, Griggs shared that the day prior one of his patients, a wounded warrior, came through to visit. Griggs said he is touched by many of those stories and that his exposure to soldiers like that one is a very humbling part of his job. Even as he excelled in his medical career in the Army, Griggs never let go of his love of performing. Most recently, he landed a coveted role in "The Music Man" that opens in Raleigh April 13 for one weekend with the North Caro- lina Symphony Orchestra. He is especially fond of "The Music Man" as it was the first show he appeared in at the Cape Fear Regional Theatre under the direction of Dirk Lumbard. Lumbard went on to direct him in many oth- er shows, to include "Singing in the Rain" and "White Christmas" and has inarguably been a large influence on Griggs' work on stage. It was he, aſter all, who taught Griggs all the bits that make up "The Music Man". Other roles that you might recognize him from are Lumiere from "Beauty and the Beast", the Tin Man from "The Wizard of Oz", several iterations of "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" and most recently, the Cape Fear Regional Thea- tre's 50th Anniversary show. With 40 shows under his belt since 2002, it's safe to say that Griggs is a pillar in Fayetteville's theater community. He returned from Joint Base Balad in Iraq late last fall aſter serving as the Division Surgeon there, where he worked with the 310th Expedi- tionary Sustainment Command alongside a Re- serve Logistics Unit. "When I was deployed, I did not have both jobs as part of my life. Not being able to do radi- ology or theater — I was not happy," said Griggs. Upon retirement Griggs said he and his wife have always joked about getting a recreational vehicle with a satellite hookup so that he can continue his radiology work part-time while they travel around to theaters across the coun- try. He commented that he enjoys both equally and would be miserable without either one of his jobs.
