Motsie's advice for creating your own English cottage garden: Begin with your front entry. Create a welcoming space by adding lots of colorful pots, a sitting area (if possible) and varieties of flowering plants in the beds bordering and leading to your home. When creating gardens, establish your boundaries first. Mark the perimeters to your yard and begin creating the "rooms" within your yard, thinking symmetrically and using sweeping curved lines ("curvilinear") to frame each gardening section. Determine each space's purpose. Do you want herbs or fresh flowers for cutting? Do you want a vegetable garden? Would you like a beautiful view from your kitchen window? A way to attract butterflies? How much time and energy can you devote to gardening? In each "room" (garden bed), create a focal point — the thing first noticed when viewing that space. Choose a hardscape (such as bird house, bench or statue) for the winter season when a flowering focal point (tree, bush or plant) isn't in bloom. Continue to anchor the space with taller plants or flowering trees and bushes in the middle and lower plants along the outer edges. Fill in spaces with a mixture of evergreens, perennials, annuals, herbs, potted plants and hardscapes. Don't get caught up in creating the "perfect" space. There are no hard and fast rules to garden design. If something doesn't work, don't be afraid to pull it out and start again. "Don't worry about a plan," said Motsie. "But, have good lines."
