While the Port City will forever be linked by the short country drive down Highway 87, this ever- changing coastal town offers something new and exciting to both its short-stay visitors and its sea- sonal residents. With beaches, boats and baited fish available to sun and fun seekers, Wilmington also has an array of recreational options, and is especially known for its proximity to numerous golf and tennis fa- cilities. Historic Downtown Wilmington can be traversed by trolley, horse-drawn carriage, foot or riverboat and Airlie Gardens features seasonal events to go along with its majestic vistas. As the weather starts to warm, here are a few key selections located around Wilmington that a visitor from the Sandhills (or anywhere else) can easily experience during a weekend getaway. A Place to Stay Downtown Wilmington is well known for having a wide variety of bed and breakfasts. With many of them craſted from restored mansions and bungalows, there are unique abodes for any budget. Some of these BnBs can also take on more of a small hotel flavor. One favorite, located on South Second Street, is Hotel Tarrymore. With eight newly-restored and suite sized rooms all based on coastal themes, this small hotel provides the comforts and flavor of a beach cottage in a city and is ideal for small wedding parties or just a small family. Outside each room, rocking chairs provide a comfortable place to take in views of the cobblestone streets. While the hotel section is upstairs, downstairs Press 102 is a European-inspired sidewalk cafe- style restaurant. Both indoors and out it is a great place for breakfast or for weekend brunch. Known for their paninos and chick and waffles, the coffee is also not to be missed Owner Jeff Jones opened Press 102 and restored the Hotel Tarrymore just three years ago, and the large banquet room on the north corner of the building is an excellent place to hold events, meetings or receptions.
