The fi nal deadline to apply is Sept. 18, but teachers who submit their application by the 'early bird' deadline of Aug. 14 will be entered for a chance to win one of fi ve $100 gift cards. "We're proud to support educators who give so much to their students," said Dirk Burleson, vice president of member and corporate services for Rutherford EMC. "With our Bright Ideas grants and early bird prizes, we're excited to offer something in return. We encourage all interested teachers to submit an application by Friday, Aug. 14 for a chance to win an extra $100." Teachers can apply for Bright Ideas grants of up to $1,000, which is part of $600,000 in Bright Ideas funding that will be awarded to teachers statewide during the 2015-2016 school year. Classroom teachers at qualifying schools in and around our 10-county service territory can apply for grants individually or as a team. Last year, Rutherford EMC awarded more than $15,600 locally to fund 17 projects at 17 schools. The application, grant-writing tips and more information about the Bright Ideas education grant program can be found at www.ncbrightideas.com. A total of fi ve $100 Visa gift cards will also be awarded in late August to teachers who submitted their applications before the Aug. 14 'early bird' deadline. These winners will be notifi ed, and recognized on the Bright Ideas website and Facebook page at www. facebook.com/ncbrightideas. "Rutherford EMC believes there's no better way to support education and contribute to our local communities than by partnering with teachers to enhance learning opportunities for our future leaders," Burleson said. Since 1994, North Carolina's electric cooperatives have awarded more than $9.6 million in Bright Ideas grants funding for more than 9,200 projects benefi tting 1.8 million students. The Bright Ideas education grant program is an example of the electric cooperatives ' commitment to community. North Carolina's electric cooperatives serve more than 2.5 million people in 93 of the state's 100 counties. Rutherford EMC, headquartered in Forest City, N.C., is a rural electric cooperative that maintains over 7,160 miles of power lines to provide electricity to over 68,000 member-consumers in a 10-county area of the southwestern Piedmont. TEACHERS: BEING A BRIGHT IDEAS EARLY BIRD COULD WIN YOU $100 Article Provided By: Denise P. Gavin Rutherford EMC Announcing Broad River Alliance a Waterkeeper ® Affi liate The Waterkeeper © Alliance recently announced the Broad River Alliance, a Waterkeeper ® Affi liate. The contact for the newly formed Affi liate is David Caldwell, broadriveralliance@ gmail.com. About the Waterbody The Broad River basin encompasses 5,419 square miles within North and South Caroli- na. Its three major tributaries are the Green, the Second Broad, and the First Broad rivers. The Broad's headwaters and major tributaries originate on the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains and southern slopes of the South Mountains. The Broad then crosses into South Carolina and makes its way to the Atlantic Ocean. From its spectacular and scenic beginnings in the Hickory Nut Gorge, the Broad River and its tributaries provide water for drinking, industry, and recreation for Rutherford, Polk and Cleveland counties in North Carolina as well as much of South Carolina. Five Natural Heritage Program (NHP) Priority Areas are found in the basin: the Rollins/ South Mountains Natural Area, Hickory Nut Gorge, the Green River Gorge, the Pacolet River Gorge, and Pinnacle Mountain. Lake Lure, Chimney Rock State Park and a portion of Crowders Mountain State Park are also located in the basin. These signifi cant Natural Heritage Areas provide habitat for more than 100 rare plant and animal species and 24 rare natural communities. About the Affi liate The Broad River Alliance (BRA) is a collection of citizens and organizations working to protect and promote the Broad River Watershed through education, recreation, and stew- ardship.
