The Dogwood Festival has kept families with young children in mind as they work with the
Par tnership for Children of Cumberland Count y ( PFC) in planning the inaugural Dogwood New
Year's Eve Par t y in Festival Park.
The par t y star ts at 6 : 30 p.m., but the kid's par t y will peak at 8:30 p.m. with a special, less noisy
fireworks display. By then the youngsters will have had t wo hours of fun in a specially-designated
area just for children.
Planners are arranging for an ar t activit y for kids, as well as age-appropriate play that will keep
children happily engaged.
Tina Newcomb, a Program Development Administrator for the Par tnership for Children, is the
Dogwood Festival board member in charge of this aspect of the par t y. Children and their needs are
the focus of the Par tnership for Children, so this par t y will have plent y to at tract families, even those
with ver y young children.
The tradition of of fering something for young children at local festivals began in 2004 when PFC
began hosting the children's area of the Dogwood Festival. The Par tnership for Children beieves all
children should enjoy an event and not be restricted to strollers, so they developed the Toddler Zone,
a safe area of the festival designed just for children 5 years old and younger.
