"This age group is the one that's going to have the impact in the 2010 to 2020 range," deViere said. "Why not socially engage them? Seeing this vibrant group of young people energizes the community." Fayetteville is pretty attuned to the fact that baby boomers are reaching retirement and young professionals are moving up the career ladder. Movers and shakers in the community who are too old to join Young Professionals want their children to be a part of the group. "They see the benefit of it, too," Meave said. The Chamber has designated a position on their Board of Directors for the Young Professionals chairman. About 40 percent of FYP members are employed by businesses who are Chamber members, Meave said, but they don't serve as the representative to the Chamber and therefore don't receive the communications. It is not necessary to be employed by a Chamber member business to join the Fayetteville Young Professionals. The Benefits To Young Professionals Fayetteville Young Professionals gives members the opportunity to succeed and contribute to a growing and thriving community. The social networking events allow members to meet new friends, get job references, pass around resumes, generate business and develop business relationships among others their age in the Fayetteville community. Members also attend other local organizations' events and learn more about what's happening in Fayetteville. The annual dues to be a member of FYP is $45, which covers attendance at two monthly meetings and any additional civic gathering the group plans to attend. For the cautious potential member, one can attend any FYP function for just $10, which can serve as a down payment of sorts on the annual dues, if one becomes a member. Professional development luncheons provide a training tool for members by showing them how to run a board meeting, how to dress for interviews and how to be learn from diverse business leaders' philosophies, to name a few examples. A mentor program, where young professionals will learn firsthand from more seasoned professionals, is also on tap. FYP members enjoyed a Halloween "hike" through downtown Fayetteville in October and the group also attended an election returns viewing evening at the Holiday Inn Bordeaux on election night in November.
