Notes of the Lyre 4 ALUMNAE UPDATE W e want to hear from you! Alumnae are encouraged and welcome to keep us up to date on personal news about your family, career, activities, and contact information. As sisters of Phi Chapter, we want to utilize Notes of the Lyre as a way to keep in touch. IN MEMORIAM Evelyn Whiteford McIntire '36 passed away September 13, 2014, in Richmond, Texas, at age 96. She married Ray in 1941 and moved to Midland, Mich. A move to Newport News, Va., in 1957 brought her social interaction skills to a new group of people who became close friends. Returning to Michigan in 1964, she plunged back into church, various club activities, and even larger flower gardening projects. On winter vacations to Florida, she and Ray enjoyed golf with other couples and initiated Bible study groups. After his death in 1996, she remained in their home in Michigan for many years before moving to Texas to be close to her family. Ruth Crary Garrelts '38 passed away August 17, 2014, at age 97. Mary F. Ormsby-Trenkle '38 passed away January 28, 2014, at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence in Kalamazoo, Mich. Mary earned a master's degree in speech and hearing at Northwestern University in 1944, where she met her loving husband, Ed. Charlotte Frichot Wood '42 passed away May 24, 2014, in Tulsa, Okla., at age 92. Her portrait was one of a handful of KU beauties selected by Peruvian artist Vargas to be featured in the KU yearbook. Upon graduation, she married Blaine Imel and they had three daughters, Barbara, Deborah, and Cynthia. Charlotte went back to school to earn her master's degree in education at the University of Tulsa, and then taught biology at Edison High School until her retirement. She was active in her church, participated in the Meals on Wheels program, and was a past regent of the John Robinson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mary Jo Moxley Rahatz '46 passed away March 7, 2015. She remained a loyal and avid Jayhawk basketball fan until the end. Mary went on to earn her Ph.D. from the University of Missouri of Kansas City. A lifelong educator, Mary's passion for reading and education made her an integral teacher, principal, and administrator for the Shawnee Mission School District. Mary Jo graciously included the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation as a beneficiary of her estate. What a wonderful gift for our sisterhood! Joan Happy James '47 passed away July 5, 2014. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Roger; her children, Andy (Laura), Evan (Joanie), and Karen (Kevin); and eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Joan and Roger raised their family in Prairie Village. She represented her beloved sorority as president of the Greater KC Panhellenic. Joan worked alongside Roger in helping to build the James Printing Co. Vivian Miller Young '50 passed away May 31, 2014, at Lakeview Village in Overland Park, Kan. She was a wife to Milton, a mother, a grandmother, a sister, a sister-in-law, an aunt, and a friend. Vivian retired as a Mary Kay director with 32 years of service. She loved to read, sing, and travel, and was vivacious, social, and incredibly likable. Vivian was an Irish fighting machine! Her battle with cancer is over, but her spirit will live on forever. Bonnie Hyten Zrubek '54 passed away March 2, 2012. She married Mathew and graduated from Wesley Hospital Nurses Training School in 1959. She was very active in the Alpha Chi Omega CU chapter for many years, and a die-hard Denver Broncos and CU football fan. She enjoyed making her own clothes, reading, watching movies, playing bridge, and spending time with her close friends. Elizabeth "Beth" Crimi '62 passed away October 19, 2013, at her home in California. She received a master's from American University in criminal justice. After working as an adjunct professor at American University, she worked at a men's prison as a teacher of academics and then spent 16 years teaching at a woman's prison in Jessup, Md. She retired in 2009. Julie Anne Perry Schenkel '71 passed away December 11, 2012, at age 60. As academically driven as she was creative, she went on to earn an MBA in finance from Western Illinois University in 1982. Julie will be remembered as a passionate and caring mother by her two sons, Montgomery and Nathan, as well as Montgomery's husband, Lucas. ALUMNAE NEWS Betty Heitmann Piper '37 worked for the Dairy Council of Greater Kansas City as assistant director after graduation until 1944 when she married Donald. Besides her participation in the Alpha Chi Omega Mu Mu alumnae association, she participated in a number of women's organizations in Kansas City. Betty moved to Brookedale Plaza Shore Drive Senior Living in Chicago to be near her daughter in 2010. At age 97, Betty remains in good spirit and participates in glee club and church. Audrey Harris Chew '44 lives at Otterbein Retirement Home in Lebanon, Ohio. She still plays golf and swims laps. Her favorite undergraduate memory was rooming with Nancy C. Reed '43. Martha Gragg Chase '48 stays active by playing bridge several times a month and attending church. She lives in Joplin, Mo., with her husband, Ned. E-mail: bugira@cableone.net Carol Krehbiel Kreischer '49 enjoys life with her daughter in Ann Arbor, Mich. Her favorite undergraduate memory is the love she received from Alpha Chi and the opportunity to do things she didn't think she could do. Mary Anne Wolf McClure '49 is 84 years old and still lives in her home in Lawrence. She is active in many community, church, and Alpha Chi activities. What a wonderful sisterhood!" Marilyn Bondurant Anderson '61 thought the Centennial Celebration was fabulous and loved meeting the undergraduates, visiting the chapter house, and reconnecting with friends.
