The workshop included lo- cal community leaders and invited guests from veterans' organiza- tions and service agencies. The committee began in April of this year and is chaired by Maj. Phil Cushman, USMC (Ret.) of Quartzsite. He said the committee was convened to fi nd out what can be done to improve health care for veterans in La Paz County. Cush- man said he hopes that LPRH will soon be recognized by the Veterans Administration (VA) to serve local veterans. Quartzsite Council member, Rob- ert "Gunny" St. Germain said there are at least 2,000 military veterans Veteran's Health Committee formed living in La Paz County. When you add the spouses and children the number could double. He said, "There are no services in Quartzsite or in the county for our veterans. We have to all pull together." La Paz County Attorney Tony Rog- ers announced the new Veterans Court would hold its fi rst session Aug. 13 at Parker JP 6. He said the court would be a tool to get at the heart of the problems veterans face. Many attendees at the workshop felt the health care provided by the VA is excellent, while others ex- pressed their problems come from dealing with the bureaucracy and the lack of facilities close to where veterans live. Quartzsite Mayor Ed Foster said LPRH needed to be recognized by the VA so veterans could get their medical care locally with a liaison with VA. Dennis Dole of Veterans of VFW Post 769 said they need a VA rep- resentative who knows the system, and can tell veterans what the VA can do. Colorado River Indian Tribes' Councilwoman Amanda Barrera said she has veterans in her family and her dream is to see something more for veterans here. LPRH CEO Robert Libberton said he appreciated the sacrifi ces veterans have made, adding he's a former Navy medical corpsman himself. He added he wanted the hospital to serve those who have served this country. Cushman told participants a sec- ond workshop is being planned for Fall 2015 state offi cials would be invited. The Veterans' Health Committee and the hospital would begin work on the ideas proposed at the June 23 workshop. "In the end, it's all about helping veterans," Cushman said.
