Uniquely Corning A letter from the Chamber of Commerce The Corning Chamber is happy to be working with and for the businesses, clubs and organizations and even churches of Corning to make this a desirable place to live and work. We offer three main events throughout the year that include the May Madness Car Show on Mother's Day weekend, the Olive Festival at the end of August and Hometown Christmas the first Saturday of December. These fun events draw thousands to Corning and offer something for the whole family. Corning is known for its olives and we are proud to be the Olive Capital. We are especially proud of Bell Carter Olive Company, the largest olive processing plant in the United States. It is very much a part of the culture and history of Corning. People in the United States are becoming more aware of the health benefits of cooking with olive oil, and there is a real boon in olive oil consumption in this country. We proudly recommend our local olive oil companies that produce some of the finest extra virgin olive oil around. Corning Olive Oil, Pacific Sun Gourmet (in Gerber) and Lucero Olive Oil are all award-winning producers of olive oil and we look to a promising future as they draw travelers off I-5 to taste and buy their products. The Olive Pit and Olive Hut sell many different varieties of olives, olive oil, local nuts and gift packs and have been drawing patrons for years. You will find these businesses on the Tehama Trail, an agricultural journey through Tehama County. We encourage you to check it out at www.tehamatrail.com and visit these businesses. The city is halfway between Portland, Ore. and Los City Manager Steve Kimbrough said. "It's like having a Walmart on each of the three corners." Did you know? Angeles, and three truck stops at South Avenue —Flying J, TA and Petro — take advantage of the central location. Corning's truck stops are appreciated by the city for the hundreds of jobs and the sales tax revenue they provide. "They provide a tremendous amount of sales tax," Corning 20 Corning 2012 The three travel centers bring in more than $500,000 in sales tax annually. The truck stops are Corning's second- highest source for sales tax revenue. The stops, also called travel centers, bring a $500,000 to the city every year, giving Corning the highest per capita sales tax revenue in the north state, helping to fund the police and fire departments. Many jobs in Corning are at Major improvements were made to the South Avenue interchange with Interstate 5 in 2009, easing the way for trucks visiting Corning's three large travel centers. the truck stops. Each truck stop employs more than 100 people, meaning about 350 to 400 jobs are at the one intersection. "Corning has gained a reputation as a good place for commercial development," Kimbrough said. Wright said that is because Corning has "cheap, available land and a plentiful, cheap work force." Christine Manes, general manager for Flying J, said Corning is a great stopping point off Interstate 5 because it provides a truck stop "away from the hub of the city," she said. "It doesn't disturb the residents." The four-way stop offers three good choices so it's convenient to the customers.
