Iwasrecentlyaskedto post a purported prophetic word on the National Day of Repen- tance web site. It said — in view of the pattern of lawless- ness in gov- ernment at all levels — it was time for the chil- dren of God to recognize He has blessed our faith- fulness and given us fa- vor at this time to stand against this very lawless- ness. I gave it a "thumbs down" because it was clearly not a word from God. How did I know? It flunked the Sons of Issa- char test. The sons of Issachar were said to be anointed with supernatural under- standing of pragmatic times and seasons, their implications and conse- quences. The word flunks the Sons test because it ig- nores the very real bank- ruptcy of the Body of Christ. Yes, there is a pro- nounced pattern of law- lessness at all levels of gov- ernment from the Presi- dent re-writing healthcare law and the First Amend- ment to ignoring immi- gration law to states tax- ing illegally under their laws and expelling Chris- tian groups from univer- sity campuses for insisting leaders accept their faith. Decorated Navy Chaplain Wes Modder has been re- lieved of duty for adhering to his faith despite the fact his conduct is protected in federal law and naval reg- ulations. The jury is in on government lawlessness. But the Church has no moral high ground on which to stand. Martin Lu- ther King's favorite scrip- ture — Amos 5:24 — calls for justice to flow like a mighty river. Stewarding this process is the job of the Church, not the gov- ernment which derives its just powers from the con- sent of the governed. Yet more than a third of evan- gelicals and an unknown number of Catholics and mainliners do not even vote — let alone vote intel- ligently. In California, at least, large majorities of Christians elect the lead- ers who re-define concepts from marriage to immi- gration law to suit donors instead of constituents. Non-physicians perform abortions— this would be illegal on a family pet — and now legislators pre- pare to endorse assisted suicide despite overwhelm- ing evidence it is unneces- sary and open to massive abuse. The Church stood in the eighteenth century and a nation was founded on God's love and liberty. She stood in the nineteenth century and slavery was abolished. She stood yet again in the twentieth cen- tury and ushered in au- thentic equality and re- spect between the races. Where is the Church now that so fundamen- tal a liberty as life is un- der unprecedented attack throughout the so-called civilized world? Where is the Church — I mean each and every be- liever, not some ponder- ous resolution adopted in be-robed convention — in addressing the stalk- ers and sexual abusers in our own ranks? The per- centages of leaders who engage in these behaviors or cover them up is about the same in every denom- ination. The percentage of pastors and preach- ers who address socio- moral issues from their pulpits is correspondingly small across the board. As a young priest I informed my bishop I planned to ex- pel an admitted stalker from my congregation if he refused to leave his vic- tim alone; the bishop told me I could expect no back- ing from him. (I did it any- way.) When do the rest of us accept responsibility to be voices for justice and righteousness, with the proviso that our personal repentance must come ahead of the repentance we call out of government and society? The next National Day of Repentance is set for April 30. It inaugurates a week of prayer and fasting to culminate on May 7 and the National Day of Prayer. Californians are invited to our own statewide Day of Repentance on September 9. Who will show up that God might show off in our presence? Who will show up at future hearings, at the ballot boxes, and in the coffee hours of our churches and the coffee rooms of our workplaces? God's favor is not a reward for good behavior, but it is bestowed only on those He can trust. Are we willing to become such? California leads the na- tion in the blood of Na- tive Americans on our hands, in elective suicide, abortion, family break- ups, and the addictive cy- cles of drugs and por- nography. The Church is just as steeped in these things as any other de- mographic. We do have a mandate and a responsi- bility to address these is- sues in the public square. But we are going to have to re-earn the right to speak and — ironically — speaking out as we re- pent is part of that re- earning. But until we do this spare me the proph- ecies about God's favor resting on us. He loves us, but He cannot be very proud of us in this hour. We need to re-take the Sons of Issachar test. GODTALK Passing the Sons of Issachar test Jim Wilson Neighborhood Full Gos- pel Church of Corning would like to invite every- one to the 10:45 a.m. service this Sunday, July 5. The congregation will be having as special guests missionaries Scott and Marisa Smith, who for many years have been mis- sionaries to Spain and now branching out into other parts of the world. They are two of many missionaries that the church supports on a monthly basis. Scott is orig- inally from Red Bluff. There is no charge but a love offering for them will be collected. The church will also be celebrating Holy Communion during the service. The church is a at First and South streets in Corn- ing. For more information, call 824-2323. There will also be Sunday School for all ages at 9:30 a.m. and regular evening service at 6 p.m. FULL GOSPEL Missionaries to speak at service By Maryclaire Dale The Associated Press PHILADELPHIA A prison that Pope Francis plans to visit during his U.S. trip houses a former church of- ficial jailed for his handling of priest sexual-abuse com- plaints. Monsignor William Lynn is serving a minimum three-year sentence after a jury found he endangered children in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Lynn, 64, is housed at the Curran-Fromhold Cor- rectional Center while he appeals his conviction. It's unclear if he will still be there for the pope's Sept. 27 visit or whether he would be among the in- mates picked to meet with him. Defense lawyer Thomas Bergstrom said Lynn would no doubt welcome the expe- rience. Although his lawyers have called him a scape- goat for the Roman Cath- olic Church, the archdi- ocese has paid his legal bills since city prosecutors first opened their sweep- ing probe of priest sexual abuse in 2002, through a high-profile 2012 trial and appeals that continue today. Archbishop Charles J. Cha- put has visited Lynn at least once in prison, when Lynn was incarcerated in a state facility hours away. "The archdiocese re- mains behind him. I think that says a lot," Bergstrom said Thursday. "He'd rather not be there ... but he's got a strong faith, and he's do- ing fine." The pope plans to meet face-to-face with inmates and their families at the city's largest prison. It's unclear how many inmates will be chosen or whether their religious affiliations will be a factor. About 1,200 of the approximately 8,000 inmates identify as Catho- lic. "We hope he brings ... a message of hope for the individuals incarcerated here," Philadelphia Prison Commissioner Louis Giorla said this week. Francis, he said, "ap- preciates the dignity of all human beings. No one is so lowly that they can't be saved or change their lives." Lynn, the secretary for clergy from 1992 to 2004, was the first U.S. church official charged for keep- ing accused priests on the job. However, a more senior cleric, Kansas City Bishop Robert Finn, was later con- victed of a misdemeanor count of failing to report suspected abuse and given two years of probation. The pope accepted his resigna- tion this year. Appellate courts in Pennsylvania have gone back and forth on whether Lynn should have been convicted under the child- endangerment law at the time. He was released af- ter one appeals court threw out his conviction, but then he was sent back to prison this year. In all, he has spent 1 years in prison and a year on house arrest at a rectory. Francis this year strongly condemned church officials who cover up for pedophile priests, saying they cause victims "even greater suf- fering." The Philadelphia In- quirer, reporting on the pope's itinerary, first re- ported that Lynn is at the prison. Associated Press writer Natalie Pompilio contributed to this report.
